Farmington Hills: Baseus Power Bank Recall Following Fire Incident
In Farmington Hills, a domestic event has led to consequential actions across the country. A wireless phone charger from Baseus had the unfortunate fate of catching fire last February, which ignited a nationwide investigation. The outcome? A staggering 132,000 Baseus Magnetic Wireless Charging Power Banks have been recalled across the United States, effective since June 27.
The underlying issue appears to lie in the lithium-ion battery within the power banks. These were found to potentially overheat, making them a serious fire hazard, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) noted.
The fire in question was indeed intense, though relatively small. The power bank had been making hissing noises before it exploded in flames, as reported by the homeowner. Despite the fire being extinguished before the local fire crews arrived, with minimal damage and no recorded injuries, Fire Marshal Jason Baloga opted to dig deeper.
It was Baloga who reported the incident to the CPSC, which led to the investigation that spanned the entire country. CPSC reports show that there have been 39 reported incidents of the chargers catching fire, causing 13 recorded burn injuries and roughly $20,000 in property damage.
Baseus themselves have also followed up with reports of power bank swelling or bulging, receiving as many as 132 reports to that effect.
The company identified two affected power bank models:
- Baseus Magnetic Mini Wireless Fast Charge Power Bank 2022, 6000mAh 20W — Model PPCXM06
- Baseus Magnetic Wireless Charging Power Bank 6000mAh 20W —Model PPCXW06
“We really take it as our mission to get faulty products off the street”, said Fire Marshal Baloga. His efforts did not go unrecognized, with the CPSC awarding him with a coin and a certificate.
Angie Ott of the CPSC praised Baloga’s collaboration efforts with the commission, stating consumers in Michigan and nationwide should be grateful for their improved safety.
For anyone who currently possess either of the two power bank models, it is strongly advised that they cease usage immediately and dispose of the products. Baseus assures that anyone affected by the recall is entitled to a full refund with valid proof of purchase.
