One Year After Devastating Wildfire in Lahaina, Maui: Can Tourism Aid in Rebuilding the Historic Town?

Rebuilding tourism after wildfire.

First anniversary of wildfire in Lahaina, Maui: Will tourism help Hawaiians rebuild?

Aftermath of a Devastating Disaster

On August 8, 2023, the tranquil town of Lahaina on Maui’s west coast was desolated by a ferocious wildfire, accelerated by gusty winds of Hurricane Dora. Witnesses could only stare in disbelief as the flames caused explosions and annihilated homes, cars, and enshrined childhood memories. Lifelong Lahaina resident Ua Aloha Maji watched the horror unfold from his house in Lahainaluna.

Despite his best efforts to help the community, including using a generator to preserve neighbors’ food and charge essential equipment, he could not stave off Lahaina’s destruction. The swift and merciless wildfire claimed the lives of a hundred people and obliterated more than 2,200 structures, including homes, apartments, and historic buildings, essentially wiping out one of Hawai’i’s most historic towns.

The Heroic Community Efforts

In the ensuing year, the community has rallied, with local hotels housing over 7,000 displaced residents and grassroots organizations spearheading relief work. Maji noted that the incident prompted “an elevated sharing of kōkua,” the Hawaiian concept for selfless aid.

However, despite the extraordinary community spirit, the road to recovery remains rocky. With the economy battered, the island is urging visitors to return and play a part in helping residents and businesses grapple with economic strife.

Can Tourism Revive Lahaina?

The immediate objective is to convey to visitors that it’s a great time to rediscover Maui,” explained Ilihia Gionson, public affairs officer for the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority. Immediately following the disaster, tourism on the island was momentarily suspended to focus resources on the recovery efforts. Visitor activities in West Maui were only resumed in November after displaced residents were relocated.

However, the revival of tourism remains sluggish due to the catastrophic blow sustained by the local community. In the first half of 2024, visitor arrivals decreased by 23.8% compared to the same period in the previous year, further stagnating the economic recovery.

Mental and Financial Strain

A recent study by the Hawai’i State Rural Health Association attested to the distress experienced by Maui County residents, with many battling mental health issues and financial constraints. They are even contemplating leaving the island due to the economic downturn post-fire.

The Hawai’i Tourism Authority (HTA) launched a recovery campaign, “Mākaukau Maui,” meaning “Maui is Ready,” to rejuvenate the island’s economy by encouraging visitor arrival. However, despite their efforts, the island’s economy continues to lag. Visitor arrivals and spending saw a 23.8% and a 24% drop, respectively, compared to the previous year.

Healing Lahaina – A Delicate Balance

While the tourism revival has been slow and complicated, locals grapple with conflicting sentiments about resuming leisure activities even as the community strains to rebuild. Some tourists, in turn, wrangle with pangs of conscience about visiting a place undergoing a difficult recovery.

Meanwhile, Lahaina continues to engage in dialogue and debates about the future of the historic region. Members of the community propose a spectrum of ideas – from restoring things to their former state to making significant changes to protect the area from encroaching sea levels and to restore some of its original native landscapes and Hawaiian cultural sites.

Returning to Paradise – For Locals and Tourists Alike

The resilient folk of Lahaina are ready to rebuild and welcome back tourists to their beloved paradise with grace and aloha. Visitors are encouraged to participate in the local economy by dining at local restaurants, staying at local hotels, and engaging with local businesses. The HTA is also offering ongoing volunteer programs and cooperative hotel packages to visitors wanting to contribute more directly in local communities.

Despite the immense loss and heartache, optimism and resilience shine through as Maui finds comfort in its community and continued community support to rebuild the paradise lost.
