Farmington Hills Elementary School Weighs Options After Fire Impacts
School Year Disrupted By Fire Just Days Away From Opening
In Farmington Hills, a local elementary school may have to resort to virtual learning for the start of the school year due to a fire incident. The fire took place at Wood Creek Elementary School on Harwich Dr. early morning on July 27, causing significant damage to the building.
The Farmington Hills Fire Department reported that the damage was mainly on the outside. However, there was also extensive smoke and water damage inside the building. As a result, the building is currently unsuitable for use, with the start of the school year just around the corner.
One parent expressed her concerns, saying, “My son’s about to be a first grader so we were trying to get him excited for the new school year…but this fire has left everything up in the air.”
The school district, in communication with the parents, made everyone aware of the damage and mentioned the possibility of shifting classes to virtual modes until the repairs are completed. The news of possibly returning to virtual learning after an already challenging pandemic year, understandably, was not welcomed by the parents.
During a school board meeting, many parents voiced their concerns about this sudden shift towards virtual learning. The general sentiment of worry among parents was clear – uncertainty is the last thing any parent, student, or teacher needs at the start of a new school year.
Taking this into account, the district assuages parents by stating they are doing everything within their power to avoid resorting to virtual learning. Daily conversations are held with a fire restoration firm on building repairs. There is also a permit submitted to seal off the affected part of the building; if granted, it would enable the use of unaffected kindergarten classrooms. The district is additionally looking at alternate in-person facilities at open/unused buildings within the area.
