Three Students from Oakland County, MI, Threatened to Shoot Up their High School
Last Monday, three teenagers from Oakland County, Michigan shook their community with threats to shoot up their high school. According to the local law enforcement and the county prosecutor’s office, the three involved students are now facing some serious charges.
Two students from South Lyon East High School are being charged with making a false report about planning terrorist threats. The third student is also in hot water, facing charges related to intentionally threatening violence against the school, its employees, and their fellow students. For now, the students’ details aren’t public, like their names, ages, or gender.
The threats reportedly first surfaced on Monday after school. A student showed a teacher a screenshot of a post that read, “[G]uys imma shoot up the school tomorrow.” Swiftly taking matters forward, the teacher reported the disturbing post to the school authorities, who didn’t waste any time and decided to pull an investigation on the spot.
But that wasn’t all. As the investigation was ongoing, two more similar posts were reported from the same group chat. These new messages indicated intentions of “blowing up the school.” According to officials, at least ten students were recipients of these threatening messages.
Before formally charging the students with these charges, they were prohibited from entering school facilities during the investigation. The local authorities definitely aren’t taking these threats lightly. Oakland County’s Prosecutor, Karen McDonald, said, “Parents and kids should feel safe at school. These threats directly impact students, teachers, and staff, and they also undermine our community’s confidence in the safety of our schools. It’s not a joke, and the charges we issued will ensure that these students face appropriate consequences.”
Unfortunately, this incident isn’t the only one. Over the weekend, a 15-year-old girl in Monroe County was arrested for threatening to shoot up her school too. It’s safe to say, threats like these aren’t something that folks can just shrug off.
