Early Voting Commences in Illinois, North Dakota, Florida, and Michigan Ahead of 2024 Elections

Early Voting Kickstarts in Illinois, North Dakota, Florida, and Michigan

The much-awaited early voting commenced across four prominent U.S. states – Illinois, North Dakota, Florida, and Michigan. As the 2024 elections take their course, these states initiated their voting process, making it even more vital for voters to familiarize themselves with the exclusive election highlights and the steps to cast their votes.

Michigan: The State to Watch

Widely considered as one of the most competitive states this election cycle, Michigan grabs significant attention. The state has been a battleground in recent times, with it changing allegiances in 2016. However, since then, the state has been consistent towards the Democrats, manifested by their support for President Biden. The election and re-election of Governor Gretchen Whitmer further strengthens their position.

Black voters and the increase in the Detroit metro area played a pivotal role in Biden’s 2020 victory. Moreover, turning Kent County, known for its diverse mix of urban, suburban, and rural voters, was crucial too. Yet again, the outcome will not be an easy prediction, with only a 2 to 5 points lead for Harris according to recent polls.

The Importance of Early Voting in Michigan

Besides being critical for the presidential race, Michigan will also vote for a new senator this year. The state demonstrates a parallel growth with a 2% increase in population over the last decade, mainly concentrated in the Grand Rapids area. Observing the prevailing uncertainties and its decline, this election holds immense significance at this stage.

Key Downballot Races

The races are heating up at all levels across the states conducting early voting. Interestingly, four competitive U.S. House races were identified in Illinois and Michigan, intensifying the election competition.

Voting Begins in Illinois

Illinois embraced early voting on Thursday, with both in-person and absentee voting starting simultaneously. Residents can register to vote online till Oct. 20, by mail till Oct. 8, or in-person until the election day. The absentee voting will entertain no excuse for ballot reception, and the state officials must receive the ballot by Nov. 5.

How to Vote in North Dakota?

Just like Illinois, North Dakota also started the absentee voting. However, early in-person voting varies across counties, with some offering it right from the start, whereas others begin later or eventually not offer it. The state obliges no prior registration from eligible citizens to vote.

Florida gets into the Act

For Florida, apart from the commenced absentee voting, early in-person voting’s start dates differ across the counties. The residents can register themselves for voting online, via mail, or in-person until Oct. 7.

Michigan Stepping Up

Following the same guidelines as the other three states, Michigan commenced its absentee voting. The early in-person voting, here too, is based on the respective counties. Voter registration in Michigan can be done online or through the mail until Oct. 21. However, they can also be done in-person until election day.
