West Bloomfield Police Department Welcomes a New Chief
West Bloomfield, a community known for its tight-knit nature and public safety, is seeing a significant leadership change as Police Chief Michael Patton has announced his resignation. Chief Patton’s last official day will be January 10, 2025, after over three decades with the department, and his successor will be Dale Young, the current deputy chief, who will take over on January 11.
A Legacy of Safety
This transition comes as a surprise for many in the community, as Chief Patton has been a prominent figure in West Bloomfield since he started his career there in 1985. He was promoted to chief in 2010 and has since overseen efforts that have kept West Bloomfield ranked as one of the safest communities in Oakland County, with accolades even claiming it as the safest in Michigan at times. Township Supervisor Steven Kaplan shared his thoughts on Patton’s tenure, stating, “One must look to the results, which are outstanding.”
Deputy Chief Young Steps Up
At a recent Board of Trustees meeting on October 21, the Board unanimously accepted Patton’s retirement notice. During the meeting, Trustee Howard Rosenberg reflected on the “big moment” for the township, acknowledging how difficult a decision it was to appoint Patton originally but concluding it was the best decision ever made. Now, attention turns to Deputy Chief Young, who has been with the West Bloomfield Police Department since he began as a cadet in 2004.
Young is well-prepared for this new role; he has progressed through the ranks since becoming a police officer in 2006. His climb to deputy chief in January 2024 has equipped him with the skills necessary to lead the department. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Oakland University and has benefited from extensive leadership training, including the prestigious Northwestern Center for Public Safety.
Patton’s Incredible Impact
During his time as chief, Patton has not only focused on local safety but also had the honor of overseeing visits from international dignitaries. Trustee Jim Manna highlighted this, stating, “Not only has he been a phenomenal chief for all the residents of West Bloomfield, but he has overseen important visits from heads of state.” The community will surely miss Patton’s active engagement.

The Board members expressed heartfelt gratitude toward Patton during the recent meeting. Trustee Jonathan Warshay conveyed, “You’ve been a rock and a pillar of the community, a really great ambassador.” Meanwhile, Treasurer Teri Weingarden echoed a sentiment shared by many, indicating she would miss his presence. Clerk Debbie Binder acknowledged the remarkable foundation Patton built and welcomed Young’s new leadership.

As Patton prepares to step down, he has expressed his support for Young’s appointment. “I think it’s important to say he’s well-respected by all the West Bloomfield team members,” Patton said, stating that Young’s appointment would be well-received by both the department and the community.
In his remarks, Young emphasized his intention to continue building on the strong foundation that Patton established. He stated, “Part of my vision for our Police Department moving forward is to continue to build upon the foundation that Chief Patton has created.” With these words, Young sets a tone of continuity and respect for Patton’s tremendous work while looking forward to new initiatives under his leadership.
