Plymouth Welcomes New Bookstore: Elephant Ear Books Opens Its Doors
In the heart of Plymouth, a dream is coming true for local book lovers! Melissa Schabel, a well-known figure to those who love a good read, is opening Elephant Ear Books this Saturday, November 16, at 449 South Harvey Street. It’s the perfect time, just as the holiday season kicks into high gear, for residents to explore this charming new addition to their community.
From Librarian to Bookstore Owner
With more than 20 years tucked under her belt as a librarian, Schabel is no stranger to the world of books. She’s always believed that books bring people together, and she’s excited to continue that tradition in her own bookstore. “The reason I loved being a librarian is that I love to talk to people about books,” she shares, clearly passionate about her new venture.
Elephant Ear Books is set to feature a carefully curated selection of both fiction and non-fiction, along with a delightful range of children’s books. Families will find everything from board books for the littlest readers to engaging picture books and early readers. And let’s not forget about the non-fiction section, which will include memoirs, biographies, and cookbooks—ideal for those looking to whip up something delicious.
Community Input Welcomed
Schabel has her sights set on making sure that Elephant Ear Books truly reflects the interests of the Plymouth community. She plans to involve local teens in refining the young adult section of her store. “I will carry what Plymouth residents want to read, and I’m open to feedback,” she says, displaying her eagerness to create a space that resonates with the local vibe.
A Personal Touch Over Discounts
While Schabel acknowledges that she might not be able to offer the same discounts as larger chain stores, she believes that the personal touch and dedication to her customers will set her bookstore apart. After all, Elephant Ear Books isn’t just a store; it’s a cozy haven for book lovers, a place where stories come to life and friendships blossom over shared literary interests.
A Tribute to Family and Passion
The journey to opening Elephant Ear Books has been a heartfelt one for Schabel, especially after losing her father last year. This life event reignited her ambition to chase her dreams. “I hope that he’ll be proud,” she reflects. Her family has been incredibly supportive, with her mother and stepfather traveling from New Hampshire to attend the grand opening. “It’s been her dream for a long time to open a bookstore,” her mother, Denise Buxton, shares enthusiastically.
Schabel’s love for reading was inspired by her family, especially her aunt and uncle, who would gift her books during the holiday season. She fondly recalls starting her literary journey with classics like Little House on the Prairie and Charlotte’s Web, which fueled her passion for reading early on. Today, she enjoys contemporary fiction and tends to gravitate towards books by female authors.
A Dream Come True for Book Lovers
Plymouth is not just a random choice for Schabel; it feels like home. After leaving her role at the Saline District Library, she explored different downtowns in search of the perfect location. Upon discovering Plymouth, she says, “It just felt right, so I went with my gut and here I am.”
And why the name Elephant Ear Books? “Simply put, it reflects my love of elephants,” Schabel explains with a smile. The fascinating name adds a touch of whimsy to her bookstore, making it an inviting place to stop by.
