West Bloomfield Celebrates Artistic Remembrance with ‘Recollection’ Exhibit

West Bloomfield Hosts an Artistic Display of Memories

West Bloomfield is buzzing with creativity as the Janice Charach Gallery opens its doors to an engaging art exhibit titled “Recollection.” This delightful showcase runs through December 11, offering visitors a chance to delve into the sentimental reflections of several talented artists. Every piece tells a story, inviting you to explore the memories, family incidents, and personal interests that shape the artist’s world.

A Family Affair: Peggy Stulberg’s Contributions

Among the featured artists, Peggy Stulberg has a special connection to these memories. After teaching for many years and retiring from a successful career in litigation support, Stulberg returned to her true passion: painting. Having moved back to Michigan in 2017 to reside in Berkley with her husband, she’s brought her rich experiences to life through her art.

One of her compelling works in the exhibit is titled “Just Us Girls,” a touching portrayal of her, her late mother, and sister on their Oak Park front porch dressed up for a significant occasion. “These paintings are all oil,” Stulberg mentions, sharing the different mediums she uses for her art, saying, “I work with acrylic for mainly more abstract work, which is more layered and allows me to change directions easily.” It’s clear that her work is a heartfelt homage to family connections.

Marci Bykat and the Voice of Remembrance

Another artist capturing attention is Marci Bykat, who presents a deeply personal piece called “Voicemail from My Mom, January 2019.” This artwork is a fusion of emotion and memory, incorporating the voicemail messages from her late parents, preserved in an email file. “These voicemails are eternal gifts,” she says, reflecting on the complexity of grief. Bykat’s creative process involves portraying her mother in vibrant colors alongside the written voicemail and a prayer inscribed on the canvas. Her work serves not just as art but as a bridge connecting the past with the present.

Judi Mindell’s Spiritual Expression

Judi Mindell also contributes to the exhibit with a poignant watercolor piece that reflects on the prayerful moments shared during her brother-in-law’s passing. Having returned to painting after a lengthy hiatus to explore her passion anew, Mindell’s artistic journey intertwines with her devotion to family and spirituality. “I used strictly watercolors,” she explains, emphasizing her dedication to mastering this beautiful medium.

Nancy Wanchik: Remembering the Past through Shoes

Meanwhile, Nancy Wanchik brings her unique perspective on memories with an intriguing piece titled “The Iconic Docs.” Rather than focusing on people, Wanchik celebrates the nostalgic presence of Doc Marten shoes that have appeared throughout her life, especially in treasured photographs with her late husband. “We noticed many pictures captured joyful moments and everyone was wearing Doc Martens,” she shares, highlighting how the shoes became symbols of their family’s shared laughter and good times. Her artwork is a delightful homage, illustrated with acrylics, bringing warmth and a smile to viewers.

A Collective of 46 Artists’ Journeys

In total, 46 artists will grace the walls of the Janice Charach Gallery, each showcasing their own journeys through art. From personal reflections on loss and family to explorations into spirituality, the exhibit promises an emotional and heartfelt experience. Curated with care, “Recollection” isn’t just about the art; it’s about connection, memory, and the experiences that stay close to our hearts.
