Barack and Michelle Obama Endorse Kamala Harris for Presidential Run

In an unprecedented move, former U.S. President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama have publicly endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for her presidential bid. The much-awaited endorsement came to light through a video release and marks the start of more intense political maneuvering ahead of the 2024 elections.

A Historical Endorsement

The former president shared his whole-hearted endorsement on a phone call joined by his wife, broadcasted in the video. He stated, “Michelle and I couldn’t be prouder to endorse you and to do everything we can to get you through this election and into the Oval Office.

The vice president expressed her gratitude for the support and spoke about her anticipation for the campaigning road ahead — “Oh my goodness. Michelle, Barack, this means so much to me. I’m looking forward to doing this with the two of you, Doug and I both. And getting out there, being on the road.” She added, “But most of all, I just want to tell you the words you have spoken and the friendship that you have given over all these years mean more than I can express, so thank you both. It means so much. And we’re gonna have some fun with this too, aren’t we?

More Than A Resumé

The Obamas, in a joint statement, praised Harris and listed her accomplishments. “But Kamala has more than a resume,” the statement said. “She has the vision, the character, and the strength that this critical moment demands. There is no doubt in our mind that Kamala Harris has exactly what it takes to win this election and deliver for the American people.” They added, “At a time when the stakes have never been higher, she gives us all reason to hope.”

Aid from a Former President

Barack Obama and Kamala Harris, the presumptive Democratic nominee, have been following a regular touch base, with the former president serving as a meaningful sounding board for the Vice President. Obama’s intent was to keep the focus on the then-serving president Joe Biden while the news of him not seeking a reelection broke out.

The Road Ahead

Democrats have been moving quickly in their process to nominate Harris with the party adopting rules to choose their presidential nominee. With voting to officially nominate Harris likely to begin on August 1, the stage is set for a heaty battle against time and contenders.

Yet, Harris has not yet selected her running mate. Legal, political, and advisory groups are reportedly expediting one of the most accelerated vice-presidential searches in modern American history, with a goal of announcing a nominee before August 7. The race for the next presidency has indeed begun.
