Caleb Starr Shines Bright as Frankel Jewish Academy Student Wins Prestigious Award

In a heartwarming ceremony that celebrated education and community values, Caleb Starr, a standout student from Frankel Jewish Academy, was honored with a coveted award recognizing his exceptional accomplishments in both secular and Judaic studies. Held in the vibrant city of Detroit, this award highlights not just academic excellence but also remarkable leadership—qualities that Caleb exemplifies.

A Legacy of Inspiration

Sponsored by the Shamie family, the award carries the esteemed name of Ambassador David Hermelin (of blessed memory), who served as the U.S. Ambassador to Norway from 1997 to 2000. Ambassador Hermelin was a man deeply committed to community service, philanthropy, and education. His legacy continues through initiatives like this, intended to uplift young Jewish students within local day schools.

A Testament to Excellence

The award is open to both male and female students, specifically in middle or high school grades, who are nominated by their school administration. To be considered, students must demonstrate not only academic prowess but also strong leadership skills. A selection committee composed of members from the Shamie and Hermelin families and a representative from the Jewish Federation of Detroit reviews nominations rigorously.

Caleb’s Winning Essay: A Reflective Journey

This year, the essay prompt drew inspiration from an ancient Jewish text, Pirkei Avot 4:1, which poses the intriguing question, “Who is wise?” The response from young Caleb was enlightening. His thoughtful essay, titled “From All My Teachers I Have Grown Wise,” encapsulated his belief that true wisdom arises from learning with a diverse range of teachers, rather than relying solely on digital resources.

Caleb’s essay highlighted his enriching experience studying for a semester in Israel and participating in the inaugural Coalition for Black and Jewish Unity Leadership Academy. This program brought together students from diverse backgrounds, all united by a shared aspiration for peace. In his words, Caleb poignantly noted, “As Ben Zoma emphasizes, wisdom can only be gained when we listen to everyone. As Jews, it is imperative that we seek out new teachers to gain a broader perspective.”

A Message from the Federation

In recognizing Caleb’s achievements, Steve Ingber, CEO of the Detroit Jewish Federation, commended him by saying, “Caleb represents the best of our day school students.” He also expressed gratitude to the Shamie family for continuing to honor Ambassador Hermelin’s memory with initiatives that bring the community together.

Remembering a Philanthropic Giant

The spirit of Ambassador Hermelin lives on not only through this award but also through the deep impact he had on the community. He was a well-respected philanthropist and businessman, awarded the Fred M. Butzel Memorial Award in 1996, a recognition of his outstanding volunteer contributions. His passing in 2000 left a significant void, but his legacy continues to inspire others to strive for excellence and contribute positively to society.

Conclusion: Celebrating Future Leaders

As we look to the future, we celebrate students like Caleb Starr, who remind us of the power of education, community, and the importance of listening to diverse voices. The recognition he received not only honors his hard work but stands as a beacon of hope for other students in the Detroit area and beyond. We can only expect great things from Caleb and his peers as they embark on their journeys, guided by the wisdom they glean from all those around them.
