Canton Plans New Pedestrian Bridge Over I-275

Some great news coming out from Canton Township! The folks there have outlined some ambitious plans for their town, with several big-ticket projects set to get on the way. The total sum of these projects amounts to millions of dollars.

And guess what? It seems the township will also be on the receiving end of nearly $7 million in state grants to help fund these projects. Some behind the scenes negotiation by State Rep. Ranjeev Puri and State Sen. Dayna Polehanki appears to have paid off.

Among the projects is the construction of a pedestrian bridge over the busy Interstate 275. This is aimed at making life easier and safer for pedestrians and other non-vehicle road users. Currently, they have to take the risky route over I-275, which is not ideal.

There are more good news for the local community. The Summit will also be getting a facelift, with plans to expand its current space from around 1,500 sq. ft. to about 10,600 sq. ft, courtesy of a cool $2.5 million grant. Such an expansion will mean more room for activities for Club 55+, the local senior program, and other community members. Think billiards, shuffleboard, cooking classes, card games, and more exercise classes.

One more thing: the Sheldon School will also be getting some improvements to house Kids-TALK program, a child welfare initiative. It will be funded by a $1 million grant. This will see the Sheldon School become a Kids-TALK Children’s Advocacy Center that will focus on issues to do with the safety, wellbeing and stability of children and families in the area. All good news!

So, there you have it folks. It looks like Canton Township is set to have some pretty amazing infrastructural upgrades coming its way that will not only improve the locals’ quality of life but also potentially act as a magnet to draw others to its community.
