Canton Township to Invest Millions in Community Improvement Projects

"Township community renovation project"

In some uplifting news, the leaders of Canton Township have announced plans to invest millions in key community projects aimed at directly enhancing the lives of its residents.

Amongst the various ventures, the most noteworthy include a pedestrian bridge over Interstate 275, a grand renovation of the Summit, and a makeover for the Sheldon School. The budget for these initiatives comes from almost $7 million state grants secured for the township.

The bridge over I-275 is particularly significant, as it will provide a safer passage for pedestrians who routinely cross this bustling highway. It’s a vast improvement to the dangerous path locals currently use.

Members of the Muslim Community of the Western Suburbs (MCWS) are particularly impacted, as their schools and activities are situated east of the I-275 overpass, while the Medina Activity Center (MAC) is on the western side. The bridge, funded by a $3.25 million grant, will make this journey less treacherous and more welcoming for non-vehicle users of the road.

To cater to the township’s senior residents, the Canton Senior Center in the Summit is set to undergo renovations. This $2.5 million project will significantly expand the areas for activities and programming from the current 1,500 square feet to about 10,600 square feet. The revamped Summit will offer more space for activities like billiards, shuffleboard, additional exercise classes, card games, cooking classes, and many more amenities.

Sheldon School is also set for a much-needed makeover with a $1 million grant. The renovated school will host Kids-TALK, a child welfare program, that focuses on the safety and emotional health of children and families in western Wayne County. Conveniently situated near the new Youth Center, the Sheldon School is sure to become a pivotal support structure for the area’s children and their families.

These are solid examples of how Canton is actively investing in its community and helping to make it safer, more inclusive, and greatly enhancing the overall quality of life.
