Empowering Children with Disabilities: Friends Challenge Stigmas Through Children’s Book

In Canton, two friends living with disabilities are challenging stigmas and breaking stereotypes with their children’s book. Ian Flanagan, the author, and Jesse Lindlbauer, the illustrator, of the inspiring book called “Kevin Can“, are keen to empower children with disabilities, as well as educate those without.

The book’s main character, Kevin, navigates his world in a wheelchair but he’s not limited by it. “He’s just kind of showcasing all the fun things that someone who uses a wheelchair could do,” said Flanagan. From swimming and playing games, to riding adaptive bikes, Kevin certainly knows how to have fun, just like any other kid.

It’s not just about the escapades though. A strong message of disability empowerment runs throughout the book, highlighting elements of accessibility and inclusion. Flanagan hopes that the book will help “show kids that don’t have disabilities that it’s OK to be friends with kids who are different than them.”

In the book, Kevin is seen enjoying various activities with his friend Katie. There are provocative images to challenge preconceived notions, such as Kevin standing up to make a snack. In addressing this, Flanagan points out, “Just because someone is in a chair doesn’t mean they literally live in their chair. It’s not like a turtle shell where it’s connected to you.”

Beyond this single tome, the friends have plans to keep the series going with the next book already in the works. The forthcoming theme will be on service animals, an idea sparked by Lindlbauer’s lab, Trooper.

“Kevin Can” is presently available for purchase and has already touched many hearts, with parents and teachers expressing appreciation for its empowering and inclusive message.
