Novi Welcomes the Oddities and Curiosities Expo at the Suburban Collection Showplace
Odd, strange and marvelously weird items took center stage at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi as it hosted the annual Oddities and Curiosities Expo on July 13-14. The event witnessed an overwhelming crowd of over 16,000 enthusiasts who explore the world beyond the ordinary.
Two Days of Extraordinary Extravaganza
Due to the exponential growth of the Expo over the years, the show’s owners found it imperative to extend it to a two-day event, accommodating an even larger crowd. Michelle Cozzaglio, the co-owner and curator of the show expressed her amazement at the diversity of the crowd. “We get so many different types of demographics out. From serious oddities collectors to people in alternative culture, this event is welcoming and inclusive to everyone.” Cozzaglio added. In 2023, a one-day show was attended by 12,000 people, but the figure rose to more than 16,000 in this year’s two-day event.
Entertainment Galore at the Expo
From daring sideshow performances that included sword swallowing and glass-walking acts to creatively assorted vendors offering everything from peculiar taxidermy items to books, posters and even eccentric witch hats, the show had it all. More vendors were able to participate in the two-day event that also featured taxidermy projects and entomology classes for interested visitors.
Live Learning at the Expo
For enthusiasts who wished to get hands-on experience, the Expo offered unique opportunities. Visitors could learn how to stuff a rat and a jackalope with the help of guides for an additional fee. More so, guests were treated to entomology classes where they learned the art of pinning butterflies. “It’s like a quick fun little activity to do,” said Cozzaglio of these informative and fun sessions.
A Hotspot for Collectors and Creators
Lovers of unconventional art had a field day at the Expo. Elias Bloom, a Southgate resident, who has an interest in taxidermy, purchased a taxidermied duckling at the event. Meanwhile, Amanda Wooner, an author of paranormal, supernatural, and vampire-themed books, stated that she enjoys conversing with other vendors and admiring their creativity. She praised the event for being a platform where “everyone is unapologetically themselves”.
The Evolving Expo
As the Oddities and Curiosities Expo grows and evolves, experts have observed a learning curve. The two-day arrangement allows visitors greater flexibility in attending, however, it has sometimes resulted in audience splitting. Nevertheless, Gary Arnett, a graphic designer who has been touring as a vendor with the expo since 2018, considers the two-day format beneficial. He stated – “In some cities, it feels like we might be splitting the crowd, but that’s also a learning curve.” He also praised the large space in Detroit for allowing more exhibitors and visitors to participate.
The Oddities and Curiosities Expo is clearly more than just an exhibition. It’s a vibrant platform for those who appreciate the out of the ordinary, a place where creative minds meet, learn, and celebrate their shared love for the extraordinary. As Wooner puts it – “It’s just nice to make those connections, because not everyone is weird, but when you find those connections, it’s nice.” The immense success of this year’s event makes it clear that Novi eagerly awaits the next Oddities and Curiosities Expo.
