Heavy rain associated with Tropical Storm Debby has resulted in increased flooding risks, leading to the displacement of people from their homes, significant damage to property and huge changes in lifestyle for the residents. The stalled storm system is expected to move northward from mid-Atlantic into New England, stretching its impacts into the Northeast through the end of the week.
In the wake of intense flooding, rescue teams from the Bath Volunteer Fire Department saved a person trapped in their home and three individuals atop a submerged vehicle in southern Steuben County. These rescue operations, carried out on Friday, have brought discontented feelings of relief and praise for the crucial duties that first responders have been executing across the flooded region.
As part of the contingency plan, officials from Canandaigua Lake have warned boaters of increased navigational hazards caused by heavy rainfall in the region. Despite the challenges posed, the lake association reported some positive news, citing a decrease in harmful algal bloom activity on the lake. People have been advised to stay out of murky, discolored or odorous water for their safety.
Monsoon-like conditions ravaged Naples, resulting in Naples Creek bursting its banks and flooding several backyards. The deluge washed away debris and overflowed waterfalls, culminating in a state of emergency in several parts of the town.
The Steuben County Office of Emergency Management declared a state of emergency on Friday, arresting any unnecessary travel in the county until further notice. The state of emergency will remain in effect until further notice, it said. The residents of hamlets Woodhull and Addison and the Village of Jasper were ordered to evacuate due to the flash flooding dangers posed by the storm.
Delays were also reported in various flights in the Greater New York area due to heavy rain and storm conditions, with several flights to and from Rochester facing disruptions. Utility companies have prepared extra work crews and equipment to deal with likely power outages due to inevitable heavy rain and winds caused by the storm.
Tropical Storm Debby’s impacts have notably stretched beyond New York, causing severe flash flooding and wind-related damage in various parts of the southern states. From causing record rainfall and spawning multiple tornadoes in Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas, Debby has left an indelible mark across these regions. As the storm moves northward, it is projected to bring up to 6 inches more rain in some areas over the weekend, exacerbating the already grim situation.
Severe flash flooding triggered by Debby has given rise to water rescues, and led to substantial disruptions in land transportation as many roads and bridges were overrun by flooding waters. Power outages have also been widespread, with more than 300,000 reported outages over the past three days.
