Detroit Faces Traffic Jam After Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-275

Detroit – A serious crash on northbound I-275 near Plymouth has caused significant traffic disruptions this evening, following a fuel spill from the accident. The incident took place at approximately 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, and has led to the closure of the freeway.

According to authorities, the collision involved multiple vehicles, including a semi-truck and a passenger car. Early reports suggest that traffic was stopped in the right lane when a 71-year-old man from Howell driving a semi-truck failed to stop in time, resulting in a rear-end collision with another semi-truck. This caused a domino effect, pushing the second semi into a passenger vehicle, which in turn collided with a van. Another semi attempted to dodge the wreckage but ended up sideswiping the second truck.

Emergency personnel responded promptly to the scene, and the drivers of the at-fault truck and the passenger car were taken to a local hospital for treatment. Thankfully, no serious injuries have been reported.

The Michigan State Police (MSP) have closed northbound I-275 at Ford Road, along with Hines Drive, which runs under the overpass, due to the spill. Troopers have warned that traffic will be heavily impacted during the evening rush hour, advising commuters to plan for long delays and seek alternative routes.

F/Lt Mike Shaw emphasized the importance of maintaining a safe following distance while driving, saying, “It is key to leave enough following distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you. It is the driver’s responsibility to make sure they can stay in control of their vehicle and stop safely.”
