Exciting New Chapter for Plymouth: Elephant Ear Books Opens Its Doors!
Plymouth is buzzing with excitement as the new local bookstore, Elephant Ear Books, officially opens its doors on Saturday, November 16! Located at 449 S. Harvey St., this charming bookstore is set to become a beloved spot for bookworms of all ages, just in time for the holiday season. And who better to kick off this new literary adventure than Melissa Schabel, a passionate book lover and former librarian with over 20 years of experience?
A Dream Come True
For Melissa, creating Elephant Ear Books feels like a dream come true. After spending years helping others discover the joys of reading, she decided it was finally time to pursue her own dream of running an independent bookstore. \”The reason I loved being a librarian is that I love to talk to people about books,\” she shared with a warm smile. \”I just think books bring people together.\”
The store boasts a curated selection that caters to all kinds of readers, with a strong focus on fiction. Curious kiddos will also find a delightful growing section filled with board books, picture books, and beginning readers. Non-fiction enthusiasts can dive into a variety of memoirs, biographies, and cookbooks. And that’s not all! Melissa aims to consult local teens to make her young adult section the best it can be.
More Than Just Books
In addition to the fantastic book selection, shoppers will also find book-themed puzzles and charming handmade cards perfect for gift-giving. While many big-box retailers offer hefty discounts, Melissa hopes the personalized touch and warm atmosphere of her store will draw in customers who value community and connection over mere price tags. \”I will carry what Plymouth residents want to read, and I’m open to feedback,\” she emphasized.
Following a Heartfelt Journey
The idea of opening a bookstore has been brewing in Melissa’s heart for over a decade, but the passing of her father last year made her reflect on her dreams and priorities. \”I hope that he’ll be proud,\” she says, drawing strength from her family’s love and support. Her mother and stepfather, Denise and Pete Buxton, came all the way from their home in New Hampshire to cheer her on at this significant milestone. \”We just can’t say enough how proud we are of her,\” Denise exclaimed. \”It’s been her dream for a long time to open a bookstore. Growing up, she always had her nose in a book. Always!\”
Where It All Began
Melissa credits her love of reading to her aunt and uncle, who gifted her books every Christmas. From classics like ‘Little House on the Prairie’ and ‘Charlotte’s Web’ to contemporary fiction, Melissa has developed a diverse reading taste. She shares that this year, her favorite book is ‘The God of the Woods’ by Liz Moore. Can you see why she can’t wait to share her love for books with the Plymouth community?
Plymouth’s New Literary Hub
Plymouth was not a random choice for her store’s location. After leaving her job at the Saline District Library earlier this year, Melissa toured several downtowns, searching for the perfect spot. When someone suggested Plymouth, she took their advice and felt an immediate connection. \”It just felt right; I grew up in New England, and this place felt similar,\” she recalled fondly, showing her intuitive approach and love for community.
Getting to Know the Store
The name Elephant Ear Books has a playful charm, reflecting Melissa’s fondness for elephants. The store will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from noon to 6 p.m. on Sundays until the end of the year. Once January rolls around, she plans to adjust hours based on the flow of foot traffic.
