In the bustling city of Detroit, a gathering of marketing minds took place at the 2024 Michigan Association of Chamber Professionals conference. Members from the Detroit Regional Chamber’s Communications and Marketing teams gathered for an enlightening panel discussion focused on simple tools and strategies that any organization can easily adapt to boost their marketing efforts. The atmosphere was filled with eagerness as insights flowed about navigating the ever-changing marketing landscape with creativity and connection.
Kicking off the discussion was Krishaun Burns, the Chamber’s Integrated Marketing Manager, who shone a spotlight on the importance of email marketing. With an emphasis on accessibility, she stressed that well-executed emails can significantly enhance audience engagement. “Make sure your fonts are easy to read, no matter if someone is on a desktop or a mobile device,” she advised. A common mistake Burns pointed out was using a single image as the entire body of an email. This approach can easily land you in spam folders. Instead, she recommended balancing text and eye-catching visuals—like gifs or embedded videos—to ensure better delivery rates and increased interaction.
Next up was Katie Tomaszewski, the Chamber’s Social Media Specialist, who shared her expertise on the multifaceted value of social media. “Focus on community-oriented content that resonates with your audience,” she emphasized. Katie discussed the art of repurposing event blog content for social platforms, promoting member highlights, and covering events to foster a more personal connection. She highlighted how showcasing employee or customer success stories can create a sense of celebration and belonging within the community.
Tomaszewski also introduced the idea of scheduling content as a time-saving strategy for busy marketing teams. Tools like Meta, LinkedIn, and external services such as Buffer and Hootsuite can help space out content without overwhelming marketers, while also monitoring engagement and analyzing post performances.
Following Tomaszewski was Miranda Spennato, the Chamber’s Digital Marketing Manager, who elaborated on the need for a strong grasp of analytic tracking. She underlined that understanding metrics like organic search traffic and top-performing pages can be invaluable in refining content according to audience interactions. “Utilizing tools like Google Analytics allows you to see where users might face obstacles and adapt your content for a smoother experience,” she shared. Spennato advised keeping URLs concise, with a maximum of five descriptive words, and to add alt text to images to boost SEO—ultimately enhancing organic reach and connection.
Adding to the conversation was Ryan Miller, Digital Marketing Manager with experience from Hub-365. He emphasized the importance of a thoughtful approach to creating a cohesive brand presence. “Research your target audience, and tailor your messaging accordingly,” Miller explained. He underlined that branding is an ongoing journey where flexibility and adaptation play critical roles. Even if some strategies don’t land as expected, there’s always something to learn that can refine your future approaches.
A shared sentiment among the panelists was the common struggle small marketing teams face when trying to keep things fresh and exciting. Burns and Tomaszewski suggested looking beyond your sector for inspiration. “Marketing trends from other industries can spark creative campaigns that resonate with your audience,” they encouraged. Importantly, the panel reinforced that effective marketing often doesn’t require a complete overhaul, but rather enhancing existing strategies to better serve the audience.
This enlightening conversation provided attendees with a toolbox brimming with insights ready to be implemented. As they left the panel, the takeaway was clear: every organization has the potential to uplift its marketing efforts. Whether through email, social media, or traditional branding practices, fostering connections with audiences is at the heart of successful strategies.
So, why not take these fresh strategies back to your teams and watch your audience engagement soar? It’s all about making those small tweaks that bring you closer to your community!
