In a cozy corner of Oakland County, Commerce Township is buzzing with excitement as a vision 40 years in the making is finally coming to life. For decades, this vibrant community has dreamed of having a downtown—a central hub where residents can shop, dine, and gather. Thanks to the efforts of the Commerce Township Downtown Development Authority (DDA), plans are now underway for a fabulous 42-acre retail and lifestyle center that promises to be the heart of the community!
Meet Five & Main, the newest gem in Commerce Township! This fantastic development is being shaped by the talented folks at Robert B. Aikens & Associates, the same company that brought to life the beloved The Village of Rochester Hills. This new center aims to capture that charming Main Street vibe that makes other downtowns so inviting. Positioned conveniently near the intersection of M-5, Martin Parkway, and Pontiac Trail, the center is set to become a vibrant backdrop to community life.
So, what’s in store for Five & Main? Well, get ready for a delightful mix of offerings! The commercial section of the project boasts an impressive breakdown: approximately 60% retail, 25% restaurants, and the remaining space dedicated to experiential entertainment tenants, along with a grocery store. Additional features will include health and wellness spaces, such as a med spa and a pilates studio. Residents can expect to see the grand opening of Five & Main in fall 2026.
Randy Thomas, the energetic president and CEO of Insite Commercial, shared that this center will be home to “high-end retailers unique to the market” that will elevate the shopping experience in the township. And who wouldn’t want that?
The excitement doesn’t stop there! Five & Main will also feature Springs at Five & Main, a picturesque garden community. Developed by the Wisconsin-based Continental Properties, this residential enclave will offer a stunning selection of 284 studio and one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments. Imagine living in an apartment with a stylish townhome flair, complete with ground-level entrances and attached garages!
Residents can look forward to some amazing amenities, including a resort-style pool, an on-site pet spa for the fur babies, and a 24-hour fitness center. Pre-leasing for these charming apartments starts in spring 2025, with move-ins kicking off that summer. What a fabulous place to call home!
However, not everyone is jumping for joy just yet. Some residents have raised concerns about the potential increase in traffic due to this new development. Others, particularly new families, have flocked to Commerce Township with hope that Five & Main will finally offer a desirable destination for shopping and dining. According to Dave Campbell, the DDA Planning Director, many residents waited patiently, investing in new homes with dreams of someday enjoying a lively downtown that encourages walking and biking.
To alleviate traffic worries, a proactive step is being taken—a new traffic signal will be installed at the main entrance of the downtown development located at Pontiac Trail and Walnut Lake Road.
The story of Five & Main is a snippet of a much larger dream for Commerce Township, known as Commerce Towne Place. This ambitious project has been over 20 years in the making. The DDA made significant land purchases from 2003 to 2007, paving the way for development while prioritizing traffic improvements and preserving the area’s natural beauty.
Completed projects already make up this lively landscape, including the luxurious Barrington Apartment Homes, the welcoming Avalon senior housing facility, and cozy single-family homes at Wyncliff.
As Commerce Township gears up for this exciting new chapter, the promise of a vibrant downtown filled with shops, restaurants, and community spirit is just around the corner. It’s an incredible time to be part of this growing community!
