In the bustling city of Farmington, change is in the air! The long-standing Groves-Walker American Legion Post 346, a cherished landmark for over 75 years, has officially bitten the dust. Yes, you heard it right! This beloved building, located right at 31775 Grand River Ave., has been lovingly laid to rest to make room for an exciting new apartment development. It’s the end of an era, but also the beginning of something fresh and vibrant!
The American Legion, which has been a pillar of support for veterans in Farmington, has moved to a shiny new location at 21023 Farmington Road, just north of Eight Mile Road in Farmington Hills. While this relocation brings modern comforts and a new space for camaraderie, there’s a bittersweet feeling in the air as community members wave goodbye to a building that has seen countless meetings, commemorations, and fond memories.
Enter Cervi Construction, a development firm hailing from Livonia, which is set to lead the charge in this apartment project, aptly named Legion Square. According to a recent announcement from the city, this new construction will boast 30 sleek, modern apartment units, with each offering approximately 1,500 square feet of living space. Looking for a new place to call home? Well, if you have $2,000 to spare each month, this might just be the perfect spot for you!
Mark your calendars, folks! Construction is expected to kick off this coming spring. As the city embraces this new chapter, we can all take comfort in the knowledge that a piece of history will still remain at the site. In a nod to the legacy of the former post, a special commemorative plaque will be installed at Legion Square. This plaque will not only honor the property’s rich history but will also pay tribute to the brave sacrifices made by our local veterans, making sure that the community’s gratitude for their service continues long into the future.
For those who may not know, the original post building saw its bones laid back in 1948. Can you imagine attending meetings in a chilly basement where the floor was coated with around six inches of ice? Yikes! The post’s history illustrates just how far this organization has come; early meetings were quick and cold, with folks mostly standing due to a lack of seating! But things quickly got better as the upstairs space was completed, along with a much-needed furnace.
In the early 1950s, the camaraderie at the post grew deeper as the members purchased a bronze plaque to honor the brave souls from Farmington and Farmington Township who lost their lives during World War I and World War II. This dedication was a heartfelt affair, packed with friends and families gathered to remember their loved ones, and it truly showcased the spirit of community that the Legion fosters.
As we bid adieu to the Groves-Walker American Legion Post 346, we can look forward to the wave of change washing over Farmington. With *Legion Square* promising modern living spaces and the inclusion of a touching tribute at the site, it’s evident that while the building may be gone, its heart and spirit will forever remain in the community. Here’s to new beginnings in Farmington, ensuring that memories are cherished and new stories are ready to be written!
