Farmington Hills Welcomes New Chairperson for Heart of Detroit Campaign

Farmington Hills is buzzing with excitement as Dr. Gary Edelson, a partner at Associated Endocrinologists, steps up as the chairperson for the 2024 American Heart Association Heart of Detroit campaign. This initiative aims to ensure that everyone in Southeast Michigan has the chance to live a full and healthy life.

Dr. Edelson is not alone in this mission. He is joined by a dedicated leadership team including Ed Hersch, Dr. Joel Kahn, Monty Kamposh, Alan Kaufman, Dr. Randy Lieberman, Lisa and Hannan Lis, Bernie Mindell, Dr. Lowell Schmeltz, Stuart Sklar, Dr. Geoffrey Trivax, Dr. Justin Trivax, and Mark Zarkin. Together, they will guide community efforts that focus on public health, scientific research, policy change, and education.

Sara Hegarty, the executive director for the American Heart Association in Southeast Michigan, praised Dr. Edelson for his commitment and understanding of community health needs. “He is the perfect person to chair this event,” she said, highlighting his leadership qualities in the field of endocrinology.

Dr. Edelson is not just a healthcare provider; he is also a clinical associate professor of medicine at Wayne State University and a professor at Oakland University’s William Beaumont School of Medicine. His educational background includes studies at Brandeis University, George Washington University, and a fellowship at Henry Ford Hospital.

Expressing his commitment to the cause, Dr. Edelson stated, “I am honored to serve as the 2024 Heart of Detroit chair.” He emphasized the critical link between diabetes and heart disease, noting that many individuals with diabetes face a high risk of heart complications. “Seventy percent of patients with diabetes succumb to heart disease,” he added.

This year is particularly significant as it marks the 100th anniversary of the American Heart Association. Dr. Edelson urges the community and especially those affected by heart disease to support this year’s Heart Ball, making it a notable occasion.

The Heart of Detroit will take place on Saturday, November 16, 2024, at The Henry Ford Museum. This annual event serves as a celebration of the American Heart Association’s efforts in Southeast Michigan, focusing on removing barriers to health. Guests can look forward to a night filled with inspiring survivor stories, volunteer recognition, a delicious dinner, and the chance to participate in an exciting auction.
