In Farmington Hills, a new chapter begins as Assistant Police Chief John Piggott steps into the role of interim police chief this week. This transition comes as the city embarks on the journey to find a new leader for its police department following the retirement of longtime Chief Jeff King. The community recently gathered to celebrate King’s remarkable tenure on December 16, sharing heartfelt stories and reflecting on his years of dedicated service.
Chief King has been a beloved figure in the Farmington Hills community since joining the police force in 1995. Friends, family, and colleagues joined in celebration, reminiscing about his significant contributions to the department and the community. He has undoubtedly left a lasting mark, and there was no shortage of appreciation expressed at the celebration.
While the city searches for a new chief, City Manager Gary Mekjian expressed his gratitude to Piggott for stepping into this crucial interim role. “He is an experienced law enforcement leader who is respected among his peers,” Mekjian stated with confidence. “I’m confident that he will uphold the department’s high standards while we take time to consider who will lead the department in the future.”
John Piggott’s journey with the Farmington Hills Police Department began in 1996 when he was hired as a police cadet. His career has been one of continuous growth and dedication, as he has worked across various areas within the department. Piggott has acquired vast experience in administration, investigations, operations, and traffic safety. His roles have also included serving as a school liaison officer, showcasing his commitment not just to law enforcement but also to community engagement.
In July 2021, Piggott was promoted to assistant chief, and during his time in this position, he has been recognized with an impressive 46 citations and awards for exceptional police work. His qualifications are impressive, with a master’s degree in business administration from Madonna University, a bachelor’s in criminal justice from Grand Valley State University, and an associate degree from Oakland Community College. Piggott has also trained at prestigious programs such as the Police Executives’ and New Chiefs’ School through the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police and the Northwestern University School of Police Staff & Command.
As the city of Farmington Hills casts a wide net for qualified candidates, they are looking for individuals with considerable experience in leadership and strategic planning. The city emphasizes the importance of community engagement, alongside a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, which are paramount in today’s evolving law enforcement landscape. Adaptability to modern challenges facing law enforcement agencies will also be a key criterion for the selection of the new chief.
City leaders are optimistic about the search process and intend to select a new chief by Spring 2025. Until then, the community can rest assured that Assistant Chief Piggott is ready to uphold the department’s legacy and standards during this interim period. As Farmington Hills moves forward, all eyes are on the future leadership of the police department as they seek to maintain trust within the community while addressing today’s policing challenges.
