Restaurant Inspections: Spoiled food and pesky flies in Farmington Hills

A recent wave of restaurant inspections in Farmington Hills from April to August revealed some concerning findings including cross-contamination, spoiled food and plagues of small flies, according to official Health Department inspection reports in Oakland County.

Despite these violations, it’s important to note that most have already been rectified. it doesn’t automatically follow that these establishments are still failing to meet standards today.

Here are some of the ignominies discovered during the inspections conducted in Oakland County area:

Pars Restaurant – 30005 Orchard Lake Road

A routine inspection on May 23 at Pars Restaurant revealed a number of eyebrow-raising violations. Some included cross-contaminated raw meats stored over ready-to-eat foods, several food products past their expiration dates, single-use cups stored next to chemicals and visibly spoiled and mold-infested food containers in the coolers.

Craft Brew City – 27843 Orchard Lake Road

The May 2 inspection saw Craft Brew City falling short with several issues detected. Flies in the bar area, soiled soda guns, and dented cans of pasta sauce were among the least appetizing findings, not to mention food items kept beyond their seven-day limit and unmarked home-made ranch dressing.

Damas Syrian Cuisine – 28841 Orchard Lake Road

Damas Syrian Cuisine was caught up with a few problems during an assessment on July 19. The restaurant was faulted for storing raw eggs above ready-to-eat sauce, contamination risks of raw ground meat, and Windex stored perilously close to cool food storage.

India Flavors – 29205 Orchard Lake Road

India Flavors’ inspection on August 2 discovered raw meat stored above ready-to-eat food, poor sanitization at the three-compartment sink, and a significant number of small flies, particularly near the bags of onions. This inspection also noted the absence of a date marking system in the restaurant and the absence of a metal stem thermometer which is an obvious concern.

Mulligan’s Pub & Grub – 27406 W. Eight Mile

A visit to Mulligan’s Pub & Grub on May 1 found inconsistent date-marking and storage issues, particularly eggs stored in a box of ready-to-eat relish packets. The sight of unlabeled chemical spray bottles and a small leak at the bar were other hygiene issues that required immediate attention.

All patrons are encouraged to remember that the discovery of past violations doesn’t necessarily mean a restaurant has ongoing issues. Inspections are meant to serve as corrective measures and help maintain the food hygiene standards that we all deserve.
