Over in Farmington Hills, something out of a movie went down last week. A man, named Brandon Mayfield, apparently threatened another guy with a sword, then barricaded himself in his home for about five hours.
Mayfield, who is 41, was in court on Saturday, and the powers that be read off a bunch of charges, including assault with a dangerous weapon – they’re talking four years here if he’s found guilty. Plus, racially motivated threatening, another two years possibly, and not cooperating with the police, another two years. So this guy is looking at some serious time. A judge decided that if he wanted to leave jail before the trial, he’d have to pay $100,000.
Mayfield is due back in court Monday. We couldn’t find out what his lawyer had to say about any of this.
The whole thing happened last Thursday, over on West Nine Mile Road near Grand River Avenue. According to the police, a 28-year-old man was going home in an Uber or something and used Mayfield’s neighbor’s driveway to turn around. Mayfield was not happy about this, followed the car and then went at the guy as he got out. He apparently threatened the dude with a knife and used racial slurs.
The victim ran for it and called 911 from his apartment, then heard something that sounded like a gun going off from Mayfield’s direction. By the time the cops showed up, he had a sword and wasn’t just going quietly.
Eventually, after the police couldn’t talk him down, a SWAT team had to be called in. They ended up having to use gas to get the guy to come out. Inside his apartment, they found a bunch of other swords and knives, a rifle and a spent shell casing.
“Violent crime isn’t cool,, and it’s worse when it’s based on race,” said Jeff King, the dude in charge of the Farmington Hills Police. He promised that his team would make sure justice is served to protect everybody in the community.
