In an unexpected turn of events, a Florida sheriff’s deputy was killed and two others were wounded during an ambush shooting inside a home in Eustis, Florida, as disclosed by local law enforcement.
Authorities on the scene explained that the situation sprung from a disturbance call received around 8 p.m. local time. As per the reports, the first two deputies to have responded to the call were met with a sudden burst of gunfire upon entering a local residence.
The deputies initially responded to the seemingly ordinary disturbance call from a couple of houses down the street, upon reaching which they found a door suspiciously kicked-in. On entering, the officers were received by heavy gunfire.
As reported by the local Sheriff, one deputy, who had entered the house first, was shot and trapped inside, while the other one managed to pull back. Law enforcement officers arriving in support formed a team under the direction of a senior deputy but were immediately met with a hail of gunfire, with one additional deputy taking a bullet.
Sadly, the male deputy who was first wounded and confined inside the premises did not survive the encounter. The second deputy, who got hit during the rescue attempt, sustained a shoulder injury but is reported to be in stable condition. Lastly, a third deputy was hit multiple times in the armpit, stomach, and groin area – he is currently undergoing surgery.
“We had to tear the home apart to retrieve our deputy”, said the sheriff, explaining the gravity of the situation. An armored vehicle was brought in, and with the help of a robotic device, the SWAT team was able to enter the home and retrieve the trapped officer.
The confrontation resulted in two suspects being found dead when the SWAT team entered and a third being transported to a local hospital. However, shockingly, there was no previous history of violent crime or any indications that would have foreseen the escalated danger at the house.
In the aftermath of the incident, the sheriff pointed out that the officers were ambushed while performing their duty, making this incident a chilling reminder of the potential dangers law enforcement officers face while responding even to seemingly innocuous calls.
