Public Invited to Shape Future of Former Northville Psychiatric Hospital Site

Residents of Northville Township, Michigan, are being given a rare opportunity to help shape the future of a significant site within their community. Officials are seeking public suggestions and opinions on turning the former Northville Psychiatric Hospital site into an amenity that the entire township can enjoy.

A New Chapter for a Historic Venue

The site, now known as Legacy Park, spans a whopping 350 acres of land which once housed the Northville State Psychiatric Hospital. The vast property was transferred into the township’s ownership in 2009, a half-decade after the hospital ceased operations.

Since the closure, the area has undergone significant transformations. Initial demolitions began in 2012, and most recently, the prominent nine-story psychiatric hospital building, was removed from the property in 2018 and the remaining structures were demolished in 2022.

As it stands currently, all that remains is an expansive, alluring property that the Northville Parks and Rec Department wishes to develop into a picturesque park. Offering tranquillity and peace to visitors, the future park also aims to be a tribute to the site’s past.

Public Participation Welcomed

Public input is encouraged for this endeavor, with a number of consultations being planned to gauge community opinion. The first of these public input sessions will be held at the Northville Township Hall Assembly Room, located at 44405 Six Mile Road, near Sheldon Road, at 6 p.m., Tuesday, July 16.

“We’re trying to be very respectful of the past, but also provide this as an opportunity to turn this into something positive where people can visit the site and receive those benefits of recreation and mental, physical relaxation, or just an opportunity to get back in the woods,” said the Parks and Recreation Director, Derek Smith.

A Vision of Green Spaces and Recreational Opportunities

The Proposed blueprint for Legacy Park includes numerous wooded areas and 16 miles of trails, offering diverse opportunities for cycling events and general outdoor exploration. By rechanneling the site’s past and making full use of the natural surroundings, officials hope to create an environment where residents can disconnect from their busy lives and reconnect with nature.

Smith voiced his appreciation for the opportunity to shape the park from scratch, stating: “And that’s where the goals come from, just being able to connect with those residents and provide them quality of life services for the long term.”

As Legacy Park continues to evolve, the focus will remain on maximizing its potential as a community asset and keeping alive the memory of its rich history as the former Northville State Psychiatric Hospital.
