Exciting Enhancements Planned for Historic Governor Warner Mansion

Victorian mansion restoration progress.

In the heart of Farmington, exciting changes are on the horizon for the iconic Governor Warner Mansion. The mansion grounds are set to undergo substantial enhancements over the next five years, as part of a comprehensive plan devised by the city’s council members. One of the most standout proposals includes the erection of a massive outdoor structure, near about 3000 sq. ft. in size, created with the vision of functioning as a versatile gathering and events space.

The proposed structure been aptly described as a “permanent tent”, complete with heating, air-conditioning, a warming kitchen, and ADA-compliant bathrooms. Essentially, it will transform the mansion grounds into a perfect destination for a grand party, hosting up to 260 attendees. This tantalizing concept points towards a more vibrant future for the mansion grounds, letting it host larger gatherings and events which are currently not feasible given its current structure.

The noteworthy enhancements aren’t limited to just a “permanent tent”. There’s also a plan to rehabilitate the barn located on the mansion grounds which could serve as a charismatic venue for smaller gatherings and events. The entire improvements project will be rolled out in several phases, and is expected to cost somewhere between $3.5 million and $4 million.

What’s even more heartening to know is that these changes align with a respectful preservation of the mansion’s historical significance. While the mansion is currently closed to public due to some structural issues, it will see significant repairs and improvements as part of the first phase of the project. The mansion could then be used for smaller gatherings, or even for intimate moments of grand events like a bridal suite.

The city council is also considering the idea of a “big outdoor party space”, shaped by the mansion, the rehabilitated barn, and the new outdoor structure. Imagine a cavalcade of fairy lights, laughter filling a pleasant evening air, memorable gatherings and happening events – that is the vision driving these planned enhancements for the mansion grounds.

The city has managed to secure $1 million in funds allocated by the state for the project. Looking at the proposed changes, the city council is hopeful that the mansion grounds, once transformed, will bring in good revenue, primarily functioning as a rentable event space.

These planned improvements could usher in an alluring blend of tradition and celebration, reinforcing the mansion’s identity as a beloved “community jewel”. All planned changes are being made under the advisory of the Historical Society of Michigan to ensure a respectful amalgamation of history and modern utilities.
