Major Makeover in the Works for Governor Warner Mansion Grounds in Farmington?

In Farmington, some big changes could be on the horizon for the grounds of the local landmark – the Governor Warner Mansion. This historical venue may see a transformation over the next five years as plans are underway to upgrade its appeal and functionality.

A master plan drawn up by local City Council member and architect, Steven Schneemann, outlines a vision for creating a vibrant event space within the mansion grounds. He envisions a ‘big outdoor party space’, which includes a new heated and air-conditioned building, likened to a permanent tent, measuring up to 3,000 square feet. This new addition, it is hoped, will accommodate up to 260 people for various events-from weddings to corporate gatherings.

The Mansion itself, admired for its historic beauty, currently cannot support large gatherings. However, there’s a barn on the property that, with a bit of revamping, could serve for smaller events, Steven states. The new tent-like building, therefore, serves a dual purpose of preserving the Mansion while also expanding the property’s hosting capabilities.

The renovation will be divided into seven anticipated phases, stretching over three to five years with an estimated cost ranging between $3.5 million and $4 million. An earmarked and repurposed land adjacent to the mansion will accommodate additional parking needed for events.

As well as the tent-like structure, immediate repairs to the mansion itself are also in the pipeline to address existing structural issues. “What I can say is the house itself is in need of some significant, immediate repair work,” says Steven.

The mansion will continue to be used for smaller gatherings and perhaps become a preparation area for bridal parties during weddings. It will be a focal point, visible through a wall of glass from the new building, thereby accentuating the property’s historical appeal.

So, where’s the funding coming from for this major makeover? Thankfully, the city of Farmington already secured a whopping $1 million from the state for the project. Plus, the renovated grounds are expected to generate significant revenue from future event rentals, contributing to the city’s coffers.

All in all, the proposed project paints a picture of a bright and bustling future for the Governor Warner Mansion and its grounds. City officials like Farmington Mayor Pro Tem Johnna Balk envision it as a potential event space, while still holding on to its historical significance. “It’s such a landmark for our city. There’s so many opportunities for future use. We’re really excited about starting that process,” Johnna shares.

Preparations may start by Spring next year, marking the beginning of a promising journey to transform this beloved piece of local history into a lively hub for community events.
