Grand Horizons Hits the Stage in Northville

Northville is abuzz with excitement as the Tipping Point Theatre opens its 17th season with the Michigan premiere of “Grand Horizons”, a thought-provoking comedy by Bess Wohl. This play, which made waves on Broadway in 2020, takes a deep dive into the complexities of family, marriage, and the many forms love can take.

The story revolves around Bill, played by John Seibert, and Nancy, portrayed by Leigh Strimbeck, a couple who find themselves living in a seemingly monotonous senior community after 50 years of marriage. The couple’s routine is shattered when Nancy announces her desire for a divorce, a moment that leads to unexpected comedic chaos.

As their two sons, Brian (Bailey Boudreau) and Ben (Bryan Lark), along with Ben’s pregnant wife Jess (Rebecca Rose Mims), come to visit, they become embroiled in a spirited attempt to keep the couple together. From the witty banter between the siblings to the humorous interactions with Jess, a professional therapist, the play captures both laughter and deeper reflections on family dynamics.

The performances are enhanced by Karen Sheridan’s adept direction, ensuring the fast-paced dialogue and humorous situations land effectively. The set design by Jungah Han perfectly encapsulates the blandness of the Grand Horizons community, heightening the contrast between the characters’ vibrant personalities and their mundane surroundings.

While “Grand Horizons” is packed with humor—one of the highlights being a cringe-worthy moment between a son and his mother regarding her romantic past—it also doesn’t shy away from tackling serious themes like love, intimacy, and personal growth. The play’s authentic dialogue and relatable situations resonate with audiences, leaving them simultaneously laughing and contemplating.

The show runs until October 20 at the Tipping Point Theatre located at 361 East Cady Street in Northville. Special discounts for seniors, military personnel, students, and groups are available. This production will soon be followed by a fresh take on the classic “Little Women”, set to debut from November 20 through December 21.
