Denisa Burt has officially taken the role of community-resource and homelessness-prevention coordinator at the Department of Health and Human Services. Exciting changes are happening in the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as Denisa Burt steps into the role of community-resource and homelessness-prevention coordinator. Her mission? To coordinate crucial services for those who are experiencing, or are at risk of, homelessness. It’s a job that requires both heart and expertise, and Burt is ready for the challenge.
Burt officially started her new role on December 23, 2024, and she’s already making waves. Her focus will be on helping residents under the age of 60 navigate the maze of resources available to combat issues such as housing insecurity, food shortages, and health care needs. With her vast experience in the field, she brings a toolbox full of skills perfect for the task ahead.
Before joining HHS, Burt worked as a developmental specialist at Criterion Child Enrichment. In that position, she honed her skills in conducting needs assessments, making referrals, and building strong relationships with both clients and community service providers. Her hands-on experience means she understands the nuances of the challenges people face, which will aid her greatly in her new role.
While at Criterion, she focused on the unique needs of individuals and families, which aligns perfectly with her new mission. Additionally, Burt spent time as an inclusion specialist at the Inclusion Initiative in Cambridge, where she worked specifically with children who have disabilities, helping them to improve their social interactions. This background enriches her understanding of different vulnerabilities within the community.
Burt’s appointment was met with enthusiasm from the HHS director, who praised her for her energy and knowledge in the realm of needs assessment, case management, and community outreach. It’s clear that Burt isn’t just filling a position; she’s here to make a significant impact in the community.
The annual salary for this pivotal role is reported to be $67,497. It’s worth noting that this position was previously held by Libby Lazar, who served from September 2022 until December 2024. With the transition in leadership, the community is hopeful that Burt will continue the important work put in by her predecessor.
Burt’s educational background adds even more depth to her qualifications. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in children, youth, and family studies with dual minors in psychology and communications and media analysis from Lesley University. This academic foundation provides her with a well-rounded perspective, enabling her to approach challenges related to homelessness and health services critically and empathetically.
