Starting March 1, 2025, Eastbound I-696 will undergo major reconstruction, closing a nine-mile stretch from Lahser Road to I-75 for at least two years. The project includes extensive road and bridge work, a detour plan for drivers, and the rebuilding of the Church Street plaza. While there may be significant traffic disruptions during the construction, the operation aims to improve safety and support over 3,000 jobs upon completion, reflecting the region’s commitment to modernizing its infrastructure.
Hey there, fellow drivers and commuters! If you love hitting the road on Eastbound Interstate 696, you better get ready for some massive changes! Starting on March 1, 2025, a major reconstruction project is set to get underway, and trust us, it’s going to be a game-changer for those who travel this busy route on a daily basis.
Here’s what’s happening: the project will mean a complete shutdown of the Eastbound I-696 section from Lahser Road to I-75. That’s a whopping nine miles of roadway that’s about to undergo serious renovations! This portion of the interstate has been the lifeblood for countless drivers, but its pavement, dating all the way back to the 1980s, is showing its age and really needs some attention. With potholes and wear and tear becoming more frequent, it’s definitely time for an upgrade!
But wait, it’s not just the road that’s getting some love. Over 60 bridges along this corridor are also in need of maintenance and will be part of the project! It’s a big undertaking, and with everything that needs to be done, the entire operation is expected to last at least two years. This renovation aims to improve safety and create a smoother drive for everyone. Who wouldn’t want that?
However, with these changes, we anticipate an uptick in traffic on the alternative routes, and it won’t be pretty. MDOT expects to see an increase in vehicles, and delays could stretch anywhere from nine to 13 miles. Remember, not everyone will follow the detour signs, which could lead to some serious backups. So, buckle up and plan for extra travel time!
