Large Industrial Fire Breaks Out at Livonia Recycling Center

Livonia, MI – Early Friday morning, crews were dispatched to tackle a major industrial fire at the Padnos Recycling Center and scrapyard, located near Stark and I-96. The incident was reported at approximately 3:10 a.m. when a high voltage power line fell onto the facility, igniting a fire involving between 70 to 100 vehicles.

Local fire officials quickly responded to the scene and worked diligently to control the flames, which were fueled by the numerous vehicles present. As a precaution, Livonia Public Safety advised drivers to steer clear of the area to allow emergency crews to manage the situation effectively.

The downed power line also resulted in power outages in the nearby vicinity. By 10 a.m. on Friday, electricity remained unavailable in the area, adding to the disruption caused by the fire.

Concerns arose regarding the presence of hazardous materials at the recycling center. However, Livonia Deputy Fire Chief Wade Clay reported that the facility’s monitoring system played a crucial role in preventing a greater disaster. “It was their monitoring systems that oversees the oil and the gas where they hold it after scrapping a car out,” Clay explained.

Thanks to the proactive measures taken by the facility and the quick response from firefighters, the fire was brought under control before it could spread further. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported, and the situation has been assessed as manageable.

As efforts continue to clear the area, updates will follow regarding the power restoration and the recovery process at the Padnos Recycling Center.
