1 Dead, 3 Injured, Evacuations Ordered After Landslide in Ketchikan

In an unfortunate turn of events, a landslide in Ketchikan, Alaska has resulted in a tragic loss of life and has injured three others. Two of the injured are currently in the hospital, while others suffered minor injuries. The landslide caused significant property and infrastructure damage, leading to the declaration of a state emergency and invoking responses from Alaska’s lawmakers.

Evacuation and Emergency Shelter

Following the incident, mandatory evacuations have been issued for residents living along 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Avenues, as well as certain parts of Water Street. A warning has also been issued concerning the possibility of a second landslide. Residents in need are advised to use Madison Street to reach an emergency shelter that has been set up at Ketchikan High School.

State Emergency Declared

Alaska’s Governor, Mike Dunleavy, has verbally authorized a state disaster emergency. This development allows those affected by the landslide to potentially access state disaster relief funds. An official declaration, complete with a press release and statements, is expected shortly, according to a spokesperson for the governor’s office.

Residents are urged to exercise caution and to stay away from electrical lines near 2nd Avenue, particularly those that may be on the ground.
