NORTHVILLE, Mich. – Election Day Draws Large Voter Turnout Despite Precinct Disruption

On a crucial Election Day, voters in Northville, Michigan, are eager to cast their ballots as polling activity reaches a peak across the state. With polls open until 8 p.m. on November 5, residents are making their way to polling locations to participate in a pivotal election that includes presidential and Senate races.

What Happened?

The voting process in Northville faced an unexpected challenge when one of its two precincts was temporarily closed due to a gas leak. The city announced around 12:30 p.m. that voters usually designated to Precinct 1, located at the Community Center on Main Street, should redirect to Hillside Middle School until the situation is resolved. Consumers Energy crews are currently addressing the leak, ensuring safety for those in the area.

Where to Vote

Those impacted by the precinct closure should not worry. Hillside Middle School has been set as the alternative voting location. Voters should check their polling places to make sure they head to the correct site. For voters who have yet to submit their absentee ballots, options remain open until the 8 p.m. deadline today. A variety of resources are available to locate polling places, helping residents find where they can vote.

Who is Voting?

This election holds significant importance as all Michigan voters are participating in the decision for the next President and who will take over Debbie Stabenow’s vacant Senate seat. Beyond these high-profile races, local elections are also on the ballot. Notably, Oakland County residents will evaluate a proposed park mileage, providing an opportunity to preview what is on their specific ballots before voting.

Transportation Assistance

To help facilitate voter turnout, several services are providing transportation on Election Day. The SMART Bus system is offering free rides throughout Oakland, Macomb, and Wayne counties, covering all transportation types, including fixed route buses and ADA paratransit from 12 a.m. to 11:59 p.m.. Additionally, rideshare companies are also assisting voters. Lyft is providing 50% off rides up to $10 with promo code VOTE24, while Uber similarly offers a 50% discount for rides to polling places.

Absentee Ballot Guidelines

Voters who requested absentee ballots but haven’t returned them can still bring these ballots to their polling sites. If a voter opts to spoil an unsubmitted absentee ballot but chooses to vote in person instead, they must inform poll workers upon arrival. In instances where absentee ballots are lost or not available, voters are required to sign a statement confirming the status of their ballots.

What Comes Next?

As the clock ticks closer to the closing of polls, residents across Michigan are making their final decisions, heading to polling places, and utilizing transportation services to secure their votes. Voter turnout appears to be robust, with many eager to engage in the democratic process. Stay tuned for more updates as results begin to roll in after the polls close.
