Exciting Changes Coming to Northville Township with New Legacy Park!
Get ready, Northville Township! Something big is on the horizon as local officials turn their attention to transforming a 350-acre site into a stunning public park known as Legacy Park. This site, once home to the Northville State Psychiatric Hospital, has a history that dates back to its opening in 1952 and its subsequent closure in 2003. Since the township acquired the property in 2009, plans have been brewing to create a beautiful, community-focused space.
Public Involvement is Key!
Northville Township officials are reaching out for your help! They want to know what YOU think the new park should offer. To gather your ideas and feedback, there’s a public meeting scheduled for 6 p.m. on July 16, 2024. It will be held in the Northville Township Hall Assembly Room located at 44405 Six Mile Road, near Sheldon Road. This is your chance to have your voice heard as the township works to create a park that reflects the wishes and needs of the community!
A Brief History of the Site
Before it gets its makeover, let’s talk about this space’s unique past. The Northville State Psychiatric Hospital operated for over half a century before closing its doors. When the township took control of the property, it included more than 20 buildings, a water tower, and a power plant, all part of a larger infrastructure. The transformation has already begun, with the first structures demolished in 2012, and the main nine-story hospital building taken down in 2018. By 2022, most of the remaining buildings were also removed, leaving only one that will be repurposed for future use.
What to Expect at Legacy Park
The vision for Legacy Park is to create a positive space for recreation, relaxation, and exercise for individuals of all ages. Plans currently include an expansive trail system with 16 miles dedicated to mountain biking and hiking. Prairie landscapes, green spaces, and diverse trails will focus on promoting both mental and physical well-being for the community. This ambitious project has been in the works since 2012, evolving through consistent local input to ensure it meets the needs of residents.
Trail System and More!
The first phase of the trail system has already been completed, with five miles of trails open to the public. Working with Rock Solid Trails, the park will feature multi-use trails for both walking and biking, along with a 50-car gravel parking lot to enhance accessibility. There will also be a perimeter loop designed specifically for hikers, promising a chance for everyone to connect with nature right in their backyard.
Essential Services Complex: A New Addition
In conjunction with the park development, the township is also constructing a brand-new $44 million Essential Services Complex that will include facilities for the fire department, police, and public works. Set to occupy 15 acres of land within Legacy Park, this complex aims to improve emergency response and overall public safety services in the area. This ongoing project, which is backed by low-interest bonds and township budget funds, is expected to be completed by April 2025.
Be Part of Your Community’s Future!
This is a historic opportunity for Northville Township residents to contribute to a project that will shape the future of their community. So, mark your calendars for the meeting on July 16, and get ready to share your input. Your ideas will help create a beautiful outdoor space that promotes health, happiness, and community spirit. Legacy Park is set to be more than just a park; it’s about fostering connections, creating lasting memories, and leaving a legacy for generations to come!
