Sudden Resignation by Louisiana Mayor Followed by Rape Accusation
In a startling turn of events, former DeRidder Mayor Misty Roberts, 42, famous for her abruptly executed resignation last week, now sees herself facing charges of raping a minor during her term in office. This shocking development was announced by the Louisiana State Police on Thursday, confirming Roberts to be charged with third-degree rape and contributing to the delinquency of juveniles.
Abrupt Resignation and Unfolding Allegations
An investigation into the conduct of Roberts, who was in her second term as mayor, was initiated on July 26, following the request of the Beauregard Parish Sheriff’s Office for state police to look into a complaint lodged against Roberts. As the investigation advanced, “LSP SVU conducted interviews with two juveniles, one of whom was the victim. Both juveniles confirmed Roberts had sexual intercourse with one juvenile victim while employed as Mayor,” a statement read.
A warrant for the arrest of Roberts was issued, and she turned herself in to the police. Roberts was taken into custody at the Beauregard Parish Sheriff’s Office Jail at 10:13 a.m. and was released 77 minutes later on a $75,000 bond, as evident from the jail records.
Claims of Innocence and Statements of Defense
Adam Johnson, Roberts’ attorney, vociferously defended his client despite the serious allegations. He criticized law enforcement for not discussing the case with Roberts before proceeding with the arrest. Johnson stated, “It is my honor to represent Misty Roberts. My client maintains her innocence and, as it stands, she is in fact innocent.”
Johnson further urged the public to respect the constitutional presumption of innocence, stating, “We trust the public will respect her constitutional presumption of innocence which is fundamental to our system of justice,” and added, “Misty and her family are very grateful for the support they have received from their friends and neighbors and we look forward to putting this unfortunate situation behind them.”
Speculations Around Abrupt Resignation
The arrest comes after Roberts announced a sudden step back from her office, citing the need for a two-week leave on July 26, the same day the police probe began. Following this, Ken Harlow, DeRidder Fire Chief, was named as mayor pro tem. The next day, Roberts formally resigned from her mayorship by submitting a letter of resignation to the city council, stating, “For nearly 15 years, my love and passion for DeRidder has been my foundation while serving as Mayor.” She further added, “However, I must adjust my focus and priorities.”
Political Aftermath
As per the procedure, the Louisiana Secretary of State’s office has to make the resignation official. Post this, City Council President Randy Larken will serve the city as its mayor pro tem until a new mayor gets elected on March 29, 2025.
