Michigan Democrats Rally Behind Biden Despite Criticism

In a significant show of solidarity, Michigan Democrats are rallying behind President Joe Biden despite continued calls for him to step down. This comes as concerns mount over whether at 81-year-old Biden is too aged for the job. These criticism were further emphasized following his underwhelming performance against former president Donald Trump in last month’s electoral debate.

Biden Retains Democratic Trust & Support

However, Biden seems undeterred by the criticism, maintaining steadfast in the face of calls for him to step down. Moreover, the Democratic establishment is rallying around him, with prominent figures like U.S. Senator Gary Peters (D-Michigan) displaying confidence in Biden’s abilities to triumph in the upcoming elections. “Yes, absolutely. I believe President Biden can win, and I believe that we’ll be able to hold the Senate majority, and I think we also have a good shot of expanding it.” Peters affirmed.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer also showed her support, albeit proposing that President Biden take a cognitive test to quell doubters, an idea she voiced to CNN’s Abby Phillip. “It wouldn’t hurt,” Whitmer suggested

However, not all are on board with Biden. Notable voices of dissent have emerged, with politicians like West Michigan U.S. Rep. Hillary Scholten (D-Michigan) expressing their reservations about Biden’s candidacy. “President Biden has served his country well, but for the sake of our democracy, he must pass the torch to a new candidate for the 2024 election,” Scholten stated.

Michigan Democratic Party’s Stand

Despite these disquieting voices, the Michigan Democratic Party, led by Chair Lavora Barnes, remains resolute. “I support Joe Biden and Kamala Harris wholeheartedly and this party does as well,” Barnes declared. Barnes attributes the calls for Biden to step down to one poor debate performance and expresses hope that this conversation will fade as the Democratic campaign gains momentum.

The Hurdles Ahead

Biden’s understanding of the significance of Michigan is evident in his 2020 win against Donald Trump in the state by a slim margin of just 150,000 votes. However, his support of Israel’s attacks in Gaza has garnered criticism, especially from Michigan’s Arab American and Muslim communities, potentially draining his voter base.

In response to these concerns, Barnes asserts that they are actively reaching out to these communities. “We’ve got folks on the ground having conversations with voters about the importance of this election, understanding their frustrations and concerns” Barnes added.

Democratic National Convention: An Unwavering Democratic Party?

With the upcoming Democratic National Convention set for next month in Chicago, expectations are high for a strongly-united Democratic Party. Yet, predictions of potential protests both outside the convention and on its floor raise questions about the unity of the party. Despite these anticipated challenges, Barnes remains undeterred. “I’m excited about being there with fellow Democrats from around the country to celebrate who we are as Democrats, and then leave the convention ready to continue the hard work of ensuring electoral success come November,” Barnes asserts.
