Michigan Man Handed Jail Time After Shouting Expletives at Judge

Charged with Six Misdemeanors Amounting to Over a Year’s Incarceration

In Michigan, a man accused of a simple misdemeanor trespassing charge has put himself in deeper trouble after continually hurling expletives at a judge during his trial in the Washtenaw County Court. The defendant, known as Darrell Jarrell, had displayed a surprising outburst, which not only garnered the attention of online users but also saw him slapped with multiple charges by Judge Cedric Simpson.

Defendant Shows Disrespect in Court

In a dramatic turn of events, Mr. Jarrell took the court by surprise when he blurted, “I’m tired of this state, I’m ready to leave this state as soon as possible,” and concluded his statement with, “You guys can kiss my a–.” While trying to restore the court’s decorum, Judge Simpson issued a stern warning against Mr. Jarrell’s further comments.

Ignoring the judge’s attempts to bring him into line, Jarrell aggressively responded, “F— you!”, prompting Judge Simpson to immediately found him in contempt of court and add a misdemeanor charge for 93 days. Jarrell repeated the same invective several more times, with Simpson responding identically on each occasion. This continued until the bailiff finally removed him from the court room.

Incurring Multiple Misdemeanor Charges

This heated interaction resulted in six rounds of charges, potentially putting Jarrell in prison for 558 days. The proceedings abruptly ended as soon as Jarrell was physically removed from the courtroom, and the court resumed with the next case, seemingly undeterred by the previous outburst.

Interestingly, this was not the first instance of such unconventional behavior in Judge Simpson’s courtroom. Earlier this year, Corey Harris was summoned for a virtual hearing on the charge of driving with a suspended driver’s license. Ironically, Mr. Harris had dialed in for the session while he was behind the wheels.

The Case of Corey Harris

Caught off-guard by Mr. Harris’ audacity, Judge Simpson questioned if he was driving during the hearing. Mr. Harris confirmed that he was indeed parking his car at his doctor’s office. “OK, so maybe I don’t understand something. This is a driving while license suspended [case],” remarked an astonished Judge Simpson.

“I don’t even know why he would do that,” the judge lamented. Following the revelation, his bond was promptly revoked, and he was ordered to turn himself into the Washtenaw County Jail by 6 p.m that day.

Judge Simpson’s Resilience

Judge Simpson’s composure, despite these unusual events, has sparked discussions on the importance of respect in court and adherence to the rules. These instances highlight not only the clear possession of the power of the court but also the neutral enforcement of the law, ensuring that no individual can flout the system without facing proportionate consequences.
