Mifflin County Shelter Service, Inc. has seen a decrease in the immediate risk of closure due to community support. The shelter, which has been operational for nearly 40 years, faces increasing financial pressures, particularly as winter approaches. Executive Director expresses gratitude for donations and highlights the importance of a stable donor base to ensure continued support for individuals experiencing homelessness.
It’s a challenging time for our local shelter, but thanks to the generosity of community members, the immediate risk of closure has lessened. Mifflin County’s Shelter Service, Inc. has stepped up by actively reaching out for community support, and it seems the response has been heartwarming.
The Executive Director has expressed deep gratitude to everyone who has pitched in, recognizing that the support received has a ripple effect on many lives. The shelter has been a beacon for nearly 40 years, providing safety and support to those experiencing homelessness. Every donation counts and seems to have made a real difference during this precarious period.
As winter approaches, the shelter faces increasing pressure to ensure it remains financially stable. With harsh weather looming, the need for reliable services becomes critical. Unfortunately, staffing cuts to part-time only during the day have made it tough for the shelter to adequately support clients and manage cases effectively.
To keep things running smoothly, the shelter needs a full operating budget. This would ensure that they can provide comprehensive case management, help clients with timely applications for healthcare, food benefits, and affordable housing. It’s a whole lot more than just providing a roof; it’s about helping people get back on their feet!
Wondering how the shelter is keeping afloat? They run two thrift stores that operate four days a week! These thrift stores are crucial as they’re manned by volunteers, helping to bring in steady income to support daily operating costs. When you help at the thrift store or donate items, you’re directly contributing to the shelter’s mission.
It’s worth noting that while they are grateful for the income from these stores, the revenue alone is not enough to cover year-round expenses like utilities. It’s the kindness of the community that also plays a significant role, as donations of food, toiletries, and supplies help to lighten the load considerably.
Over the last nine years, the shelter has served an average of 30 individuals each day, having housed around 800 different individuals. If the shelter were to close, it could mean that clients would have to be redirected to other resources which are already overwhelmed and could be too far away. It’s a sobering thought that underlines the importance of keeping this community lifeline operational.
It’s time for the community to rally together! Everyone is encouraged to get involved by hosting fundraisers, organizing food drives, or launching other initiatives to support the shelter. Even small efforts can accumulate to create a considerable impact!
In an inspiring initiative, an anonymous donor has stepped forward with an exciting challenge—to raise $10,000 to sustain operations through matching donations. What a fantastic way to double the impact of your generosity!
The shelter also has a list of needed donations, including clothing, household products, and offers volunteer assistance. Every little bit helps, and they are counting on local hearts to open up.
As winter draws near, the shelter aims to remain a sanctuary for individuals experiencing homelessness in the community. Together we can talk about what matters—providing safety, support, and hope in these trying times.
