In a sweeping action to contain a potential health crisis, Wisconsin-based Milo’s Poultry Farms LLC has initiated a recall of all the eggs under its banner and “Tony’s Fresh Market” brand following a salmonella outbreak. This significant move comes on the back of reports of consumers falling sick across multiple U.S. states. The salmonella bacteria generally cause symptoms like vomiting, dehydration, and fever, and pose particular dangers to children and the elderly.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the salmonella outbreak has reportedly caused at least 65 people to fall ill, leading to 24 hospitalizations. Luckily, no deaths have been linked to the outbreak so far. The affected brands include all cartons of eggs labeled under “Milo’s Poultry Farms” and “Tony’s Fresh Market,” irrespective of their expiration dates.
All eggs sourced from Milo’s Poultry Farms LLC for retail food service distribution are under recall. The eggs have been supplied to stores and restaurants in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Illinois. However, the outbreak’s footprint goes beyond these states and has impacted consumers in Virginia, Iowa, Minnesota, Colorado, Utah, and California.
Following the spike in salmonella cases related to their product, the company initiated the recall after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) discovered that environmental samples from the farm tested positive for the bacteria. The FDA, after conducting whole genome sequencing, found that the samples were directly linked to this ongoing salmonella outbreak.
The CDC is urging consumers who have purchased eggs under the recalled brands to either dispose of them or return them. Those who used these products also need to sanitize items and surfaces that may have come into contact with the affected eggs.
The company, which is a family-run Amish business, has paused its operations in light of the recall. They will be focusing on appropriate testing and sanitization of their farms and processing equipment. Consumers who have inquiries or require additional assistance are advised to call Milo’s Poultry Farms directly.
