New Resource Center Opens Doors to Families in Need

In an exciting development for families facing the challenges of homelessness, the ARCHES Family First Resource Center has officially opened its doors! Just ten days ago, this new facility began offering a variety of essential services aimed at helping children and their families regain stability. So far, an impressive 60 families have already benefited from the center’s offerings.

Support Services at Their Fingertips

The ARCHES Family First Resource Center is a welcoming space that provides an array of services to support families in need. Health care, community shelters, food assistance, and rent payment support are just a few of the crucial resources available at this center. Upon arrival, many families have found their way to the center, with half of them opting for an in-person visit. This hands-on approach allows children to enjoy a dedicated play area while parents access necessary assistance.

A Safe Space for Families

The opening of this center is spearheaded by a passionate team committed to creating a nurturing environment. The center, located at 1255 Broadway St. N.E., takes over a space previously occupied by a Youth Drop-In center. With the staggering statistic that Oregon has the worst rate of unsheltered homeless children in the country—14 times higher than the national average—the creation of this center could not be timelier.

Funding and Expansion Plans

Significant backing for the center comes from a generous $5 million grant from the Bezos Day 1 Families Fund awarded in 2023. This funding not only covers operational costs but also paves the way for future expansions. The center has recently opened ARCHES Nest, a family shelter equipped to house 36 individuals, designed to directly connect families with housing options.

Essential Resources for Families

When families visit the center, they are greeted with an assortment of essential items, ensuring that they leave with what they need most. Services include diapers, hygiene products, meals, baby food, and even toys for children. Moreover, the facility is equipped with computers and cozy communal areas where families can gather, relax, and feel at home.

Meeting Diverse Needs

One compelling story highlights a family of working parents with three young children who sought assistance with food stamps, Medicaid, and dental care. The case managers at the center are dedicated to addressing the unique needs of each family that walks through the door. With a judgment-free approach, families can feel supported without the pressure of difficult conversations around their circumstances.

A Focus on Inclusivity

The center recognizes the importance of inclusivity, offering bilingual staff to assist families and providing translators for those who may speak different languages. With five staff members currently on duty, there are plans to bring on three more team members to better serve the community.

Building a Supportive Community

The commitment of the Mid-Willamette Valley Community Action Agency (MWVCAA) goes beyond immediate assistance; they are working on management and policy procedures to create a model that can be replicated in other communities. For those interested in contributing to this worthy cause, the center has an Amazon Wishlist available for donations of items needed by families.

How to Get Involved

Families seeking help can reach out to the ARCHES Family First Resource Center for case management self-assessments through a simple phone call at 503-399-9080 ext. 4045, or via email. This resource center stands as a beacon of hope for families in need, aiming to help them find stability, create a support network, and eventually rebuild their lives. The transformation starts here!
