The Northville community celebrates the appointment of a new State Fire Marshal.
Thomas Hughes Jr. has been appointed as Michigan’s new State Fire Marshal, a role he starts after over 21 years with the Northville Township Fire Department. With a strong educational background and community support, he is set to improve fire safety across Michigan.
In an announcement that’s buzzing around the community, Northville’s own Thomas Hughes Jr. has been appointed as Michigan’s new State Fire Marshal by none other than Governor Gretchen Whitmer. This exciting news marks a significant milestone not just for Hughes, but also for the entire Northville Township!
Hughes brings to the role over 21 years of dedicated service with the Northville Township Fire Department. Here, he has worn many hats, from firefighter to paramedic, with experience as a fire inspector and fire marshal. There’s no doubt that this deep well of experience will serve him well as he takes on this new challenge.
In addition to his impressive career, Hughes has a solid educational background. He holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in public safety studies from Siena Heights University and a Master of Science in technology studies from Eastern Michigan University. To top it all off, he is a graduate of the School of Fire Staff and Command at Eastern Michigan University, which adds even more credibility to his already commendable profile.
Hughes’ appointment has received warm accolades from local leaders, including Northville Township Supervisor, Mark J. Abbo. Abbo described Hughes as an excellent ambassador for the township, highlighting his knack for innovative ideas and extensive expertise in the fire service. After all, it’s not every day that a hometown hero ascends to such a prestigious role!
Hughes began his term as State Fire Marshal on June 2nd. His term will remain in effect until June 1st, 2029, or until the governor decides otherwise. He steps into this role following the resignation of Kevin Sehlmeyer, and Hughes expressed his excitement about working with the Bureau of Fire Services in his new position.
The State Fire Marshal is a critical role, overseeing the Michigan Bureau of Fire Services, which operates under the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs. As State Fire Marshal, Hughes won’t just be managing a team; he will also serve as a member of the State Board of Mechanical Rules and have ex-officio membership on the Fire Fighters Training Council and State Safety Board. This means he will play a pivotal role in shaping fire safety protocols across Michigan.
Residents of Northville can undoubtedly take pride in knowing that one of their own will be at the forefront of fire safety efforts in the state. Hughes’ journey from local firefighter to State Fire Marshal is inspiring! With his impressive background, boundless enthusiasm, and community support, there are high hopes that Hughes will bring fresh ideas and a strong vision to this important position.
As Thomas Hughes Jr. embarks on this exciting new chapter, the community stands behind him, ready to see how he will shape the future of fire safety in Michigan. It’s a thrilling time for Northville, and we are all eager to see the positive impacts this hometown hero will have!
