Northville Community Mourns the Loss of 12-Year-Old Declan Carter
Northville, MI — The community is grieving the tragic loss of 12-year-old Declan Carter, who passed away on September 26 following a devastating accident at Howell Nature Center. Declan, a sixth grader at Our Lady of Victory School, was known for his vibrant personality, kindness, and exceptional talents.
Accident Details
Declan was participating in a school field trip when a tree fell on him. Despite being transported to Mott Children’s Hospital at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor for urgent medical care, he succumbed to his injuries later that evening.
A Life Full of Achievements
Born to John and Elisabeth Carter, Declan was described in his obituary as someone who did everything quickly: from running and speaking to forming friendships. He set audacious goals and often declared, “I, for sure, can do that.” He pursued his ambitions passionately, often with a soundtrack playing in his head, as if living in his own sports movie.
Declan excelled not only in academics, achieving straight A’s, but he was also a talented cross-country runner. He broke running records and participated in national competitions, including the Junior Olympics. His energy and enthusiasm were infectious, making every day feel like a celebration.
A Caring and Kindhearted Boy
According to his obituary, Declan was also born kind, possessing an innate sense of empathy and respect for others. He did not understand why people might act otherwise. His character was built on principles of decency and thoughtfulness, making him a cherished friend and family member.

Declan was the middle child in the Carter family, between his two sisters, Georgia and Ainslie. His relationship with Georgia was particularly special, as she saw him as her protector. Memorial Service and Community Support
A memorial service for Declan is scheduled for Thursday, October 3, at Our Lady of Victory Church on Orchard Drive in Northville. The service will be live-streamed, allowing friends and community members to join remotely. Following the service, there will be a celebration of Declan’s life from noon to 2 p.m. at the Marquis Theatre and Northville Town Square.
