After an impressive run of 80 years in the heart of Northville, the well-loved Northville Downs is preparing to close its doors. This classic race track, known for thrilling horse races and a vibrant betting atmosphere, will cease in-person wagers at its current location on February 5. But before that happens, the final race is set to take place on February 3. Horse racing enthusiasts and loyal patrons can take one last visit to the track, soaking in the nostalgia and excitement before it transitions to a new era.
For many locals, Northville Downs has been more than just a place to place a bet; it’s a cherished community hub where memories were made and thrilling races were enjoyed. The Michigan Gaming Control Board is expressing their gratitude to all the loyal fans and patrons who have supported the track, making every race day a memorable event. Executive Director Henry Williams emphasized the importance of the community’s support in keeping Northville Downs alive for decades.
The good news doesn’t stop with the closure! Northville Downs has plans to relocate to Plymouth Township, having recently purchased a whopping 128 acres of land near the corner of Five Mile and Ridge roads. This site, once home to the former Detroit House of Corrections, is about to get a major makeover that could redefine the horse racing scene in Michigan.
The proposed new facility is set to be a two-phase project. In the first phase, the plan includes a two-story grandstand that will offer excellent views of the racing action along with a 23,000-square-foot racing building. This ambitious plan is currently awaiting approval from the Plymouth Township Board of Trustees. If all goes according to plan, the new location could attract even more visitors and create a buzzing environment for horse racing lovers.
As Northville Downs prepares to close up shop at its current site, it’s worth noting that customers have until February 10 to cash in any winning wagers they might have left. So, if you’ve got a little luck on your side, be sure to make that trip before the last bet slips through your fingers!
While saying goodbye is tough, there’s a sense of thrill in what’s to come. As plans unfold for a brand-new horse racing venue, the essence of Northville Downs will carry forward, ensuring that the legacy of horse racing in Michigan continues strong. This transition represents a new chapter—one that promises innovation and excitement for fans old and new.
To all the loyal patrons who have made Northville Downs such a beloved fixture in the community—get ready for one last ride before the doors close, and stay tuned for what lies ahead in the world of horse racing right here in Michigan!
