Northville, Mich. – A beloved high school music teacher, Mike Rumbell, has reached an impressive milestone: 50 years in education, making him one of the longest-serving high school band instructors in the state of Michigan. Rumbell has dedicated his life to teaching music and shaping the lives of countless students since he first stepped into the classroom in the 1970s.
Mike Rumbell, recognized for his passion and commitment, attributes his longevity in teaching to his students. “It’s the kids that make me come back,” he said, emphasizing that his dedication lies in the connections he builds with young musicians. His teaching philosophy fosters a respectful environment, as noted by Northville High School junior drum major Ethan Gajda, who remarked, “He respects everybody, even if everyone doesn’t have the same amount of respect for him.”
Rumbell’s distinct brown hat has become a symbol of his long career and is a gift from his wife. He shared a fond memory of how he came to wear it: “She came upon a hat rack and said, ‘Mike, why don’t you try this on?’ So, I tried it on. She said, ‘Gosh, you look great; you should wear it; we’ll get it,’ and the rest is history.” Since that day, the hat has become as iconic as Rumbell himself.
Throughout his extensive career, Rumbell has participated in 38 trips to the Detroit Jazz Festival with Northville students. His background is also filled with remarkable experiences, having performed alongside icons such as Julie Andrews and Sammy Davis Jr. His commitment to music education has created a lasting impact, encouraging generations of musicians to pursue their passions.
Despite his long tenure, Rumbell shows no signs of slowing down. “I feel good. I still enjoy coming to work, I suppose when it stops doing that, maybe I’ll consider leaving, but right now I’m just having a little too much fun,” he stated. His positive attitude and joyful spirit continue to inspire students and colleagues alike.
The Northville community has expressed gratitude for Rumbell’s contributions to music education. His influence extends beyond the classroom and stage, as many former students credit him for instilling a lifelong love of music. The accolades and respect he receives reflect the deep connections he fosters, creating a nurturing environment for students.
As Mike Rumbell celebrates this significant milestone in his career, he highlights the importance of passion and dedication in teaching. His story serves as a reminder of the profound impact a teacher can have on the lives of students. In Northville, Rumbell’s legacy will undoubtedly resonate for many years to come.
