Northville Township is gearing up for a significant change as Township Manager Todd Mutchler is set to retire on December 6, concluding an impressive 38-year career in public service. His retirement announcement, made on November 25, has left many in the community reflecting on his substantial contributions over the last five years in his current role.

A Trusted Successor Steps Up

Taking over the reins will be Glenn Caldwell, who has served as the Assistant Township Manager and Director of Human Resources. Caldwell has been under Mutchler’s mentorship for the past year, making him a solid choice for the position. Northville Township Supervisor Mark Abbo expressed confidence in Caldwell, stating, “Todd Mutchler’s shoes would be very tough to fill. But having someone who has been mentored by Todd could prove to be very effective.”

Abbo also emphasized the need for a candidate who understands “the Northville Township culture,” adding that it was only natural to promote someone already familiar with the community’s needs.

Understanding the Township Structure

Interestingly, Northville Township is among the few municipalities in Michigan to employ a township manager. Only about 5% of the state’s 1,240 townships currently have a manager, according to a report from the Michigan Townships Association. However, this number is gradually increasing as communities recognize the benefits of having professional administrators manage everyday operations.

As Abbo puts it, “Personally, I think it’s very effective. We can hire professional managers to handle day-to-day affairs while elected officials provide the vision and guidance.” Currently, the manager’s salary is set at $172,391, while the supervisor earns a more modest $36,050.

A Legacy of Accomplishments

Mutchler joined Northville Township in 2016, initially taking on the role of police chief after a lengthy career with the Canton Township Police Department. His achievements are numerous, including overseeing the construction of the new Essential Services Complex and successfully advocating for the Northville Township Police Department’s accreditation.

During his time as manager, he also managed the removal of decaying psychiatric hospital buildings at Legacy Park and helped the township earn accolades, such as the Top Workplaces honor from the Detroit Free Press for two consecutive years. Mutchler’s emphasis on strong policies and department procedures has undeniably left a lasting mark on the community.

“I can’t take credit for all our successes, but our team can,” Mutchler remarked, praising his colleagues and their dedication to the township’s mission. “This team has really come together to make Northville Township a fantastic place to live, work, and play.”

Looking Forward: Retirement Adventures Await

As Mutchler prepares to enter this new chapter of life, he has exciting plans in store. He and his wife, Kay, will be traveling across the country in their RV, visiting family from Oregon to Boston. Their adventure will give them the chance to catch up with their three children and three grandchildren, while also fitting in some fly fishing and skiing along the way.

“My career happened because many people sacrificed for me and my family,” Mutchler reflected, expressing gratitude for the support he received throughout his journey. “While I still have good health, I want to spend this valuable time with my loved ones.”

Community Bids Farewell

The Northville Township Board of Trustees officially accepted Mutchler’s resignation at the meeting on November 21. As the township prepares to bid farewell to a dedicated public servant, they also look forward to the promising future under Caldwell’s leadership.

With Mutchler’s retirement approaching, Northville Township is undoubtedly entering a new chapter. While his presence will be missed, his legacy will continue to shape the community for years to come.
