Beautiful Novi Township: A Beacon of Unity and Harmony

Beautiful Novi Township , the smallest in Michigan, transcends political party lines, demonstrating that unity can be achieved even in today’s polarized world. You might think that such a tiny place would suffer from political divisions, but in Novi Township, it is quite reverse. It serves as a beacon of hope and harmony, setting a brilliant example.

This intimate gem of a township is home to only 0.11 square miles. Here, the political mechanisms routinely put aside party differences to ensure the betterment of their little Eden. Neighborhood block parties are not a rarity, and it’s commonplace for people to cross party lines to vote for each other in the spirit of unity.

“There’s never any controversy or competition. It’s very peaceful. No one is trying any shenanigans, the election will not be stolen, it is basically a given,” says Nathan Foster, a resident who recently scored the Democratic nomination for township trustee on 23 votes. His neighbor, Kevin McCallum, will join him on the ballot in November, running as unaffiliated.

Others, including Tony Galdikas—the sole candidate for the role of the supervisor, Clerk Janeen Crittenden who is seeking reelection, and Treasurer David Hall—all enjoy unopposed candidacy, ensuring their elections. Inspired, they call the township, “Class 101 in how to get along with your neighbors and people in general.”

Novi Township is a homely neighborhood, offering “country living in the city.” Its residences are scattered over expansive 1-acre lots, each supplied with their wells and septic systems. There are no commercial establishments within its bounds, adding to its tranquil charm. As per the 2020 census, the population stands at an intimate 160 residents.

Tax rates are usually lower, as the township contracts out for crucial services, like fire services and library usage, to the Michigan State Police and the City of Novi. The residents don’t take their blessed peace for granted, priding themselves on their meticulous budgeting and fiscal frugality.

Tales of disagreements or clashes in the township are sporadic, a rarity almost compared to the frequent discord seen elsewhere. The largest issue they recall was probably when the board was considering arranging landscape at the central area for mailboxes—a matter they sorted within six months unanimously.

The closest they have come to controversy was when the City of Novi tried to annex the enclave, a proposition declined by the residents. They continue to stand proudly, basking in the individuality of being Michigan’s smallest township.

“Typically when they go up, they get scooped up,” Foster remarks about their homes. “This is a sweet enclave, a treasure… Certainly there are some people here who take pride in being in the smallest township in the state of Michigan. It’s a uniqueness that we are proud of.” Indeed, for those seeking peace and camaraderie without compromise, Novi Township is a dream realized.
