Novi Welcomes New School of Optometry as UDM Receives Pre-Accreditation Approval

Exciting News from Novi: UDM Gets the Green Light for a New School of Optometry!

Attention, residents of Novi! There’s some fantastic news on the horizon that’s sure to brighten up the future of eye care in our community. The University of Detroit Mercy (UDM) has just been granted pre-accreditation approval for a brand new School of Optometry! This means that starting in December, folks can apply to be a part of the very first class that’s set to kick off in fall 2025.

A Little Background on Optometry Schools

With this development, UDM will only be the 25th school of optometry in the entire United States and the second in Michigan. Can you believe that? This means we’ll have more trained professionals ready to take care of our eye health, which is something we all can appreciate!

Why is This So Important?

Well, here’s the scoop: there’s a growing need for optometrists in our state and across the country. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has projected that jobs in this field are expected to grow by 9 percent from 2023 to 2033. That’s a rate faster than many other professions! So, why is this happening? There are a few reasons:

  • An aging population that will need more vision care services.
  • People realizing just how important eye health is.
  • Retirements! Many optometrists will be leaving the workforce, creating openings galore.

More Than Just Education: A Community Effort

UDM isn’t just throwing together a program; they truly believe in meeting the needs of the community. Faculty, staff, and university leaders have teamed up to make sure the School of Optometry offers programs and services that are relevant and beneficial to local residents. It’s all part of the university’s mission to expand their healthcare footprint and provide the much-needed vision care for Michiganders and the surrounding areas.

Setting a New Standard in Eye Care

The establishment of the School of Optometry and the new Detroit Mercy Eye Institute, which has already started accepting patients as of April, represents a significant move to boost the quality and availability of eye care in our region. It’s pretty exciting! These initiatives align perfectly with UDM’s values, which emphasize producing skilled, ethical, and culturally sensitive eye care practitioners. Just imagine the positive impact this will have on our community!

Let’s Talk Salaries and Opportunities

Now, here’s something else to chew on: the median salary for optometrists in 2023 is around $132,000 a year! That’s nothing to scoff at. If you’re considering this career path, you’ll also be happy to know that the BLS predicts there will be about 2,200 job openings for optometrists every year over the next decade. That’s a lot of opportunities waiting for aspiring eye care professionals!
