The lively National Patients’ Convention, organized by Mission Arthritis India (MAI), shined a spotlight on how these groups are evolving from merely offering moral support to becoming powerful advocates for research, policymaking, and treatment guidelines in rheumatoid arthritis management.

High Profile Guests and Inspiring Discussions

The event welcomed a variety of distinguished guests, including the IRA President, who took center stage as the Chief Guest. Along with other notable speakers such as Dr. Kiran Seth and Dr. Kavita Krishna, the convention aimed to engage both patients and professionals in conversations about the latest advancements in arthritis treatment. More than 100 patients attended, alongside around 15 rheumatologists, marking the event as a significant convergence of knowledge and support.

As the discussions unfolded, the audience was treated to the exciting release of an annual souvenir that highlighted the progress in arthritis management. Participants exchanged innovative ideas on treatment strategies, emphasizing the need for continuous support and advocacy from patient communities.

Over the past 25 years, treatment approaches for autoimmune arthritis have undergone remarkable transformations. It was noted that there are now about 40-50 different treatment options available, offering hope and improved quality of life for patients. During the event, the critical role of patient advocacy groups gained prominence, as they are encouraged to engage in research funding and advocate for policy changes that can enhance insurance coverage and accessibility for arthritis treatments.

Among the inspiring messages delivered was a call for resilience. Advocates emphasized that facing the challenges of arthritis is not just about dealing with physical symptoms, but also about nurturing a resilient spirit that inspires both patients and caregivers. Nahar Oration Award was presented to Dr. Vaijayanti Lagu Joshi, recognized for her pioneering work as a female rheumatologist. Another special mention was Shalaka Burande from Pune, who was honored with the CRD Vat Viruddha Yoddha Award, celebrating her commendable contributions.

Additionally, Vachasamrita S, Co-Founder of Lupus Trust India, received the Shri Haribhau Rathiji Vat Viruddha Yoddha Award, affirming the impact of advocacy and support in the arthritis journey. The event also recognized Dr. Arvind Chopra’s significant contributions to the field, welcoming him as a member of the prestigious 2022 class of the American College of Rheumatology Masters, underscoring his role in understanding the burden of arthritis and promoting community awareness through efficient research projects.
