Plymouth Township Eyes Exciting New Horse Racing Venue

Plymouth Township, Mich. – Exciting times are ahead for horse racing fans in Michigan! Northville Downs, the last horse racing venue in the state, has set its sights on building a brand-new facility right here in Plymouth Township. The proposed site is just a hop, skip, and a jump south of 5 Mile Road near Ridge Road and is sitting on the historic property of the former Detroit House of Corrections.

What’s On the Table?

So, what’s the game plan? The initial phase of this ambitious project will feature a grandstand, a horse barn, and of course, a racetrack where the action will unfold. But wait – that’s not all. Plymouth Township is eager to see more than just horse racing; they’re looking for a full-blown entertainment complex!

Plymouth Township Supervisor Kurt Heise shared his enthusiasm saying, “We’re flattered that they’ve come here to Plymouth Township to make an offer on this site.” The township is requesting that any development plans also include additional recreation and entertainment opportunities. “Think community events, Fourth of July fireworks, outdoor concerts,” Heise elaborated.

Horsemen Are Onboard!

As passionate about the project as the township is, horsemen are equally excited. Ron Simons, who has a rich background in both horse racing and civil engineering, believes that the proposed site is more than just perfect. “For me personally, and for all of the horsemen and business owners, it’s a great opportunity,” he expressed. “I think it’s an excellent location.”

Clean and Green Initiatives

Just like the roles of our beloved racehorses, this development will also have some responsibilities! The Plymouth Township property is managed by the Michigan International Technology Corridor, which means that any new construction must fit within the so-called Clean and Green guidelines.

What does this mean for the new racetrack? Well, Heise shared some exciting details. “They’re looking to install solar panels,” he explained. Yep, you heard that right! Beyond solar panels, they’re also planning an array of environmentally friendly features such as LED lighting, rain gardens, and more daytime racing and events. This approach aims to keep energy consumption in check!

What’s Next?

The next step in this thrilling journey will be a presentation from Northville Downs to the Plymouth Township Planning Commission this coming February. If everything goes as planned and they get a thumbs-up, the proposal will then be presented to the Board of Trustees for final approval. Fingers crossed, folks!

A Bright Future Ahead?

While it’s an exciting time for horse racing in Plymouth Township, it’s also a pivotal moment for the local community. Bringing this unique facility could transform not just the entertainment landscape but could also invigorate the local economy. With recreation, entertainment, and the thrill of horse racing all in one spot, it sounds like the making of a delightful destination!

So keep your eyes on Plymouth Township as it gallops towards a vibrant future. Whether you’re a horse racing aficionado, a fan of community events, or just someone looking for some fun, there could soon be something for everyone!
